Title: Safin's ranking by end 2007

Accidents_happen - December 3, 2006 10:35 AM (GMT)
This was "resurgence year" for Marat Safin.
Now that he is showing some good form and looks capable of destroying many top tenners, how do you think he'll fare next year? What will his year year end ranking'll be?
I expect him to get back into the top 10.

Marat is as capable of getting a big win as he is of shanking against a low-ranked opponent.

So for him to string more than 3-4 good results together, esp as you need to do to get into the top 10 is a big 'ask'.

You are expressing confidence about one of the most enigmatic and unpredictable players on the tour!!! Surely anyone who has followed his game will know that it's difficult to ever predict anything with Marat.. :(

As long as he is in form, I believe that Marat can get into the top 10.
But the main thing is IF he won't lose his temper/choke too often.
Anyobody remember that choke against Ramirez Hidalgo at Rome? :yikes:

Agreed.. the ATP would be all the better for having him back in the top 10, and preferably top 5..

Re: chokes.. It's sometimes tough being a Marat fan..

I think by 2007, it will be top 8 at least. Has only Valencia and IW points to defend early on, and you know he's just building everything up for a Big Aussie Open run this year.

Go sAfin, keep having these odd years of success

Yea gotta agree with you there.

Also Safin doesn't take it as seriously as the other players. I think he is happy to indulge himself in the Playboy lifestyle rather than training day and night

I hope he does get back in the Top 10 as he certainly has the talent... he just doesn't have the right mind frame

It's sometimes hard to be good looking, isn't it?

And in this mind frame, he now seems likely to be holding Russia's DC hopes in his hands. :yikes:

If he wins this, I'll say he has a good season ahead of him ... it doesn't come with more pressure than this.

Well, he *did* win it, not without some drama though. Let's hope I'm right, and next year gets better for him ...

Well everyone said that about Greasy Nalbandian when he won the Masters Cup last year and his 'great year' never really materialised

True ... but in his case I don't mind so much rotflmao

If Safin can get his act together,he certainly has the game to be in the top 5 and to challenge anyone.

Dark_Necrofear - December 4, 2006 02:09 PM (GMT)
Safin by right and virtue of his talent should be world number 3...Like I posted on BBC.There is currently a joke top 10 with the exception of Federer and Nadal.I dont rate workhorses very high!

Gav - December 4, 2006 02:11 PM (GMT)
He can be top 5 with a change of attitude and a few less injuries.

Federer-Williams - December 4, 2006 04:34 PM (GMT)
He is capable of no.2 I think however he will get to no. 6?

I am not being a fedtard for thinking he can be 2. I beleive he has the ability to beat Fed but not regularly and he does not win or get to the final in EVERY tournament he enters.

Brakkus - April 8, 2007 03:59 PM (GMT)
As he is totally unpredictable he could end up top5 or struggling to stay in the top30.
It all depends on his motivation at the time, but I just feel physically that knee is taking the confidence factor out of his game.
As we know Marat is a streaky player, and gets on a roll, but he could easily blow up and bomb out in early rounds.
I always hope he will perform,as he is an immense talent, but sadly the great performances are out-weighed by the bad ones these days. :(
