Title: Biggest disappointments as a WTA fan

liam_valid - December 1, 2006 10:21 PM (GMT)
In these desperate times of the Top Ten being so sparse of my favourites players, heres a list of some disappointing times for me as a tennis fan :(

1. Seles not winning Wimbledon (imo, thats thanks to Navmoanalotova)
2. Kournikova not achieving more ( I adored her when she was around)
3. Pierces injuries/form losses (i know its rare a top player can maintain their best form all the time, but i feel we didn't even see a third of Marys best play due to one thing or another)
4. The Williams walkabouts (see above)
5. Sue Barker not winning Wimbledon (if she did, she might get the credit she deserves nowadays)

The Dav - December 1, 2006 10:35 PM (GMT)
Well, mine are a bit predictable :D

1. Lindsay not winning Wimbledon 2005
2. Lindsay not winning the US Open 2004 - These two Slams were hers :(
3. Lindsay not winning the Aussie Open 2005
4. Myskina losing the Olympic semi
5. Dementieva not having a Slam

Quite agree with this selection Bliv. :D

BAck to Liams though, I am completely in the dark in terms of what Sue barker achieved, I know she won the French, I think.. did she do much else? Although saying that, can you imagine a Brit Girl today winning the French??

Exactly, a British girl winning a non grass GS deserves merit just for that. But she was top ten for a while too wasnt she, and people only see her today as a game show host rather than one of our last greats in ladies tennis

liam_valid - December 2, 2006 02:12 AM (GMT)

I don't know about the first one. I thought that it was ridiculous that Serena lost all morale just for that. She should have held her nerves and just woin it.
I must admit that it was a pathetic lie though.

I have to agree. I think the Williams Sisters would easily have won a few slams here and there had they been back properly, but I don't think they would have dominated as they once did. Sharapova taught Serena a thing or two at Wimbledon 2004 for example. There can be no excuses I think, not even from the fans. As great as the Williams sisters are, and I do think they are badly missed on tour, a truly great champion does not lose interest in their sport. If they are injured, then fair enough.....I still don't think they would have dominated as they once did.

IMO Gav, the rest have caught up now. Deep down the williamses, especially Serena, probably know it. Their major thing over everyone else was their power - not such an advantages anymore because everyone can spank the ball.

yeah, I agree. I doubt anyone will own the tour, and have their own year where they were by miles the best, like some current players have had. Times have changed. There are many good players these days.
