Have you ever heard Stevie Ray Vaughns version ? I have an old tape of his, the other Stevie even appears on it. Brilliant guitarist, pity he died so young.

Some General Information, for starters.
Please include a link to youtube (or another site if possible) for the song that you wish to include on this thread, to enable people to hear the song/ see the video.
When posting your link, please include the title of the song and the name of the artist along with your link.
It would be great if you could also write a bit about why you love a particular song, or perhaps there is a funny story to tell about it, or maybe it brings back other good memories?
Also, if you wish to include a link to a great site relating to this style of music, then please add it to this thread!
I shall write a little about this section, and also post an example to start this off :)

This thread is all about those guitar heroes!
The sort of people that spring to mind include Eric Clapton (incuding Cream), Jimi Hendrix, Robert Cray, Ry Cooder, George Thorogood, JJ Cale, Stevie Ray Vaughan.
Of all the categories where vituoso guitarists are prevalent, it should definitely include Blues Guitarists. Examples of this are BB King. I've just found a list in the web that should just about cover many of the others!
http://www.digitaldreamdoor.com/pages/best_bluesguitar.htmlYes, quite a lot!!!
This section should probably exclude Rock bands even though they have fine guitarists.. They should of course be posted in the rock section.. :)
Big Al - November 25, 2006 11:33 PM (GMT)
In many peoples opinion Eric Clapton is the best white blues guitarist ever.
He is probably best known for his early days in Cream who were the first Supergroup, and he really has a place in music history for turning blues into rock .
After seeing him live in '85 I got myself an electric guitar and managed to learn to play a few notes of these two classics , both recorded in the Nineties when he was at his very best :

Cocaine by JJ Cale is a brilliant song. Just love the laid back guitar groove. :D
Have to admit to just nto being a big Clapton fan, although of course I do admire his guitar skills. I am not fond of may of his hits, however I've heard a lot of old stuff by him as my guitarist mate is Clapton obsessed, and you cannto deny how great he is at the blues.

The Eagles almost deserve a category of their own , but Joe Walsh was an inspiration to many of the other guitar heros mentioned so far so I post it here :
Don Henley had a solo hit with Dirty Laundry in 1982 ,great song B)
BTW, It was recorded at the Rod Laver arena B)

Yeah Henley did Boys of Summer. He had a very successful solo career, the drummer of the eagles but obviously multi-talented.

Yeah I never realsied he was in the Eagles until a few years back. Also th eother guy - is it Glen Frey? He had solo hits too. I think he sings a song in Thelma and Louise, I can hear it but cant; think of the title. It's played out at the end of the movie I think. Part of You, Part of Me maybe?
Dinky Jo - December 22, 2006 11:37 PM (GMT)
Bit of James Taylor for you - not sure if anyone else counts him as a lord of the strings, but I think he's great!!! I'm sure it'll moved if it's in the wrong thread!!!

I don't know much of the work of Ry Cooder.. but I love the soundtrack that he did for the film 'Paris, Texas'.
Here are the opening 3 minutes to the film..
Paris, Texas - Ry Cooder
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2jMAWY5JRPw...related&search=The soundtrack is really cheap to pick up, and is worth every penny.
I first saw the film when I was about 16.. and recall being rather taken by the haunting feel of the film (where the music undoubtedly helps create this atmosphere).. oh, and Nastassja Kinski too!
And the film also features Harry Dean Stanton..
Have pretty much forgotten most of it (kind of fitting as I think that memory loss features in the film..!). Worth another viewing, I would think.
Lex - December 23, 2006 12:10 PM (GMT)
I think this has got to be in here...
Deliverence - Dueling Banjos'tis a classic :)

Heres one of my favourite Ladies though , often wanted to marry her ;)

Lynard Skynard anyone ? B)
'Freebird' is an absolute classic and a dream for self-indulgent guitarists, but my favourite is Sweet Home Alabama :

Some info on Cooder :
The 1981 film Southern Comfort (starring Powers Boothe John Carradine) had a similarly atmospheric slide guitar soundtrack by Ry Cooder. Set in the swamps of Louisiana as it was, and a great film in its own right . Havent managed to find a link for it yet, but heres a selection of his other stuff :

Not sure if this is a guitar legend as such but I cant; really find the right category. I'm sure Al will like it anyway :D
Don Henley (ex-Eagle) - Boys of Summer
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SjGmhLmk-okI just love the vibe of this song. It is so evocative of driving down the beach in the sunset, as you do! :D I keep hearing it played a lot these days, i think someone did a rubbish dance version of it like they did with Stevie Winwood's fab Valerie, but at least ti has made it popular again. I heard a guy play this in a bar last week and it was most enjoyable.
SuperBRAT - May 16, 2007 02:00 PM (GMT)
Again not sure where to post this but it a very much a guitarist's song. I saw a great rendition of it last week by two guys with guitars in a Brixham pub. Lovely summery tune
