Am I allowed to troll here? Here is a personal video favourite which I was surprised to find on youtube - the greatest instrumental musician of all time (in my view), Sviataslav Richter, sending a chilling warning to Roger Federer (who does play the piano.)

ooh.. you can't call that sort of introduction 'trolling'; it's far too classy an interruption!! roflmao
Anyway without being pernickety, good that you mentioned Sviatoslav Richter. you didn't mention that he was playing Chopin's Etude Op.10 No.4. That's as about as close to trolling that you got there Nick!!
Wow, he is an amazing piano player!! :o I saw Andreas Schiff play a wee while ago, and he was rather good indeed.. and on a more populist level saw Michael Nymen play too. also very nice, but in a more filmy sort of way rather than virtuoso sort of thing..
And it's amazing what you can find on youtube, isn't it!! :ok:

Petalp, I normally thoroughly enjoy your posts, but please do not mention András Schiff on this board again!! He's a banal self obsessed charlatan who has nothing much to say musically about anything but insists on saying it anyway... The true genius of living Hungarian pianists is Mr Zoltán Kocsis, who dishes out bagels and breadsticks to Schiff on a daily basis!

I stand corrected, Nick!! I won't let his name darken your door again!
Thanks for another pianist to check out instead of the transitional arrogant hungarian!
well, I'd be interested in finding out any more that you'd recommend.. On a classical front I tend to like more minimalist stuff, often of the filmic style.. my favourite film composer is a Polish guy called Zbigniew Preisner.. have you heard of him?
And this is my 3,000th post on CC ! Good grief!!!

Actually, here is something that is very funny - the Russian pianist Arcady Volodos mucking about at home. Kocsis says he is the most technically gifted pianist he's ever seen (not a great musician in truth).
I once was asked to interview Volodos for Hungarian Radio. Although you hear him saying things in English on this recording, he doesn't speak any languages except Russian and neanderthal Spanish and is almost comatose away from the piano. I served six clever questions for him and the full extent of the interview was "da, da, nyet, da, nyet, da."
I was later told that he isn't normally that loquatious!
Anyway, the link of Volodos mucking about:

Wow! I get the feeling that you really know your stuff when it comes to classical music!!!
And you did the inteerview for hungarian radio?! that is so cool..! Why do I get the impression that this is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of the things that you do in this field..?
Am listening to the clip that you provided at the moment.. I did go up to grade 4 in piano, so know enough to get by, and sounds like he can bash out a decent tune.. but as before I sense that your knowledge of classical music is rather good indeed...
Oh, SB and I have talked about dividing this thread into subsections, as there has been so many genres covered in this thread. We have even had a Bollywood section can you believe it.. this was my knowledge from havign Indian friends and even playing Bollywood songs when DJing.. and SB's experiences from the Indian restaurants that she frequents!
I shall PM Nick H and see if he can divide it up, as I think that this would really help make the ideas in each genre more accessible :)
petalp - October 21, 2006 07:43 PM (GMT)
Looks like SB is checking out other sections of CC.. Ah well, will return to this thread later..

Hey SB!
Was just talking about you to Nick Cica here.. :D Was recalling our converastion about bollywood songs..
nick seems to have an amazig knowledge of classical music.. WE really need to have this thread divided into subsections as we have discussed before :)
|
I agree! :ok: But mayeb also keep a general thread so as everyone can just chuck in what they like, you knwo so that some dont; feel isolated from all the specialities :D Count em out on classical though, I'm useless.

Some General Information, for starters.
Please include a link to youtube (or another site if possible) for the song that you wish to include on this thread, to enable people to hear the song/ see the video.
When posting your link, please include the title of the song and the name of the artist along with your link.
It would be great if you could also write a bit about why you love a particular song, or perhaps there is a funny story to tell about it, or maybe it brings back other good memories?
Also, if you wish to include a link to a great site relating to this style of music, then please add it to this thread!
I shall write a little about this section, and also post an example to start this off :)
petalp - November 24, 2006 12:25 AM (GMT)
This is the culture section!
The classical music should hopefully be self explanatory..
The film score music should be orchestral music rather that actual songs from films (they should go in other sections..!) So, am thinking of Ennio Morricone, John Williams, Arvo Part Henryk Gorecki and Zbigniew Preisner (the latter a personal favourite of mine)
And Musicals?! Ooh, I feel a song coming on!!! roflmao
Dinky Jo - November 28, 2006 11:15 PM (GMT)
The imperial march......remixed
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xtjQqNFO21AI know i'm going to get massacred for saying this, but i love this version!!!!
And the best bit of the phantom menance(????) The duel of the fates (with random scenes from the film too!!!!)

The central theme to Gladiator.I just simply love this movie. This music is so uplifting, reflective, and moving all at the same time.I reckon I'll still be watching this film in 20years time,it's that good IMO.

This is the reason I love cinema,Superman and Star Wars.I saw these two movies when they were first released and it has left an indelible mark on me ever since. Can't decide which I love best on the music side, this theme or the Star Wars one.
I remember coming out of the cinema when I went to see Superman with my cousin, and we were pretending to fly with our coats out behind us. roflmao

Here is a video to a piece of music from one of the best soundtracks that I own of one of my all-time favourite films:
A Quai - Yann Tiersen
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K03DZM3M1-EThe whole soundtrack is perfect for the film, and also stands up as a fabulous piece of work in its own right. Yann Tiersen is one extremely talented musician!!
I think that I have seen this film maybe 5-10 times (3 of which were on the big screen, including its UK premiere) It's a delight to watch every time..
What film is it? Ah, click on the link to find out ;)

"Spectacular spectacular" in Moulin Rouge!
http://youtube.com/watch?v=PD0XTDgv8uQSuch a hilarious scene B)
It's hard to believe now that Nicole Kidman had once the role of Virginia Woolf...
petalp - January 7, 2007 09:32 PM (GMT)
That was in 'The Hours'..
I have the soundtrack to that.. it's pretty good.. cascading piano and all that. Philip Glass.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=41Eyl1VLmpEI liked the Virginia Woolf bit the most in the film (didn't like the other 2 stories as much)

I love the one Sam mentioned, in fact oddly enough it's been giong through my head in cylces for over two weeks now
My favourite theme tunes are John Williams though i.e. Star Wars and Jurassic Park are my favourites.
There are plenty of great theme tunes that were already in existence before being chosen to go with a film though.
Particular favourites: the Debussy from Ocean's 11, Mozart's Canzonetta sull'aria from the Shawshank Redemption, Moon River from Breakfast at Tiffany's, Gabriel's Oboe from the Mission
and one Im not sure about - the Godfather Theme by Rota, I assume this was written for the film?
