Description: Ambient, Electronica, Trip-Hop

Another great Royksopp song, Eple.

Some General Information, for starters.

Please include a link to youtube (or another site if possible) for the song that you wish to include on this thread, to enable people to hear the song/ see the video.

When posting your link, please include the title of the song and the name of the artist along with your link.

It would be great if you could also write a bit about why you love a particular song, or perhaps there is a funny story to tell about it, or maybe it brings back other good memories?

Also, if you wish to include a link to a great site relating to this style of music, then please add it to this thread!

I shall write a little about this section, and also post an example to start this off.

This is the more relaxed thread!

In terms of ambient/ electronica, I'm thinking of things like the Orb, Boards of Canada, Air, Sigur Ros..

Trip Hop is predominantly a mid to late 90s musical trend and featured the likes of Massive Attack, Tricky, Morcheeba, Sneaker Pimps..

But particularly with Ambient, this could easily be a song by a band that is usually a club band and recorded a particularly mellow song that you like to play when winding down at the end of the day!

More of a trance-style classic of the early 90s

Papua New Guinea - Future Sound of London

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GCoCTkC0oL0

I never tire of hearing this... great stuff!! :ok:

Disappointed that the Sub Sub song 'Ain't no love (ain't no use) isn't on youtube..

petalp - December 16, 2006 07:23 PM (GMT)
I hd wanted to post a classic song called 'Smokebelch II (beatless mix) by a band called 'Sabres of Paradise, but it's not on youtube! boo! hiss!

Anyway, I did find this one, which is a good one..

Wilmot - Sabres of Paradise

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DUxZz4lVRfA

SoB is the brainchild of Andrew Weatherall.. i.e. a bit hip and trendy.. If you do see the CD 'Sabresonic II' going cheap then pick it up!!

This is soooo good. You have great taste Petalp!

I guess I could do a little vid with the song and upload it Youtube... with some random photo's from my PC in the background! lol.

Actually, I'll put my Alps hol pics in it as that is what the song reminds me of. :D

petalp - December 16, 2006 07:28 PM (GMT)
This is an absolute classic!!

Little Fluffy Clouds - The Orb

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oWMIXgCaJPQ

I remember dancing to this in clubs back in '91.. then it got reissued in '92 and was huge!!

The voice sampled is Ricki Lee Jones.. she was not happy about this, apparently..

15 years on, this song still sounds fantastic.. :ok:

Hey trisco! :D

Yay, someone else knows Smokebelch too!! :yahoo:

Ooh.. that song with the Alps in the background would be amazing..! They would go so well together :)

A man of fine taste, Mr Trisco!! :D

Another Gem:

Original - Leftfield Halliday

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zTZVEpMX0p8

Ah, they don't write them like they used to, etc, etc...

Toni Halliday was (and still is) an indie band called Curve.. much as I quite liked them, I think that this one-off is at least as good as (if not better than) anything that Curve ever did..

I loved the Tricky CD 'Maxinquaye'. And this for me is one of the best tracks on the CD.

Overcome - Tricky

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NoWWrXBruSo

I have just found out that this song samples another song (no surprise there) but am particulrly surprised that the sample is from a song called 'Moonchild' by Shakespeare's Sister.. Well I never knew that!

I love Martina Topley-Bird's voice..

petalp - December 16, 2006 08:03 PM (GMT)
Speaking of Tricky, here's a song sung (in the main) by him:

Karma Coma - Massive Attack

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rliA0EjpHh4

This is one of the best Massive Attack songs. And that is saying something!! And quite a cinematic video as well.

petalp - December 16, 2006 08:13 PM (GMT)
Ooh, am on a trip-hop trip now!!

Here's another favourite:

Wandering Star - Portishead

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hba1_wHMSDQ

I know that Sour Times, Glory Box etc might have been bigger, but I particularly love this song.. great sound, and of course Beth Gibbons has a fabulous voice..

petalp - December 16, 2006 08:18 PM (GMT)
Another classic:

6 Underground - Sneaker Pimps

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QnzMT0O5Kqo

I think that this song was used for the big screen version of 'The Saint' back in '97? Anyway, fantastic song, again just sounds as fresh as it did all of 10 (ish) years ago..

10 years ago? :yikes: roflmao

trisco - December 16, 2006 08:36 PM (GMT)
Scuse me for asking, how old are yo PP? We got very similar taste in music... Portishead  Sneaker Pimps
Although with the Sneaker Pimps, I have to admit I was intorduced to them by the Armand Van Heldon take on Spin Spin Sugar

Hey Trisco :) I'm in my mid/ late 30s.. so more than a bit older than you!

Mind you, even at immigration at NYC recently, the guy thought I was late 20s, so maybe I just behave like a late 20-seomthing as well! Dinky Jo thought that I was your age too :)

Mind you I am about to post some New Order in the glumrock thread (as you had mentioned it on another thread) so that might show my age a little more!

Was still doing some dj ing in indie clubs in 95 or thereabouts (albeit sporadically)

And also we've talked about the Cardigans from around that time too! So clearly we were both listening to a lot of music around that time :ok:

trisco - December 16, 2006 09:19 PM (GMT)
Here is the song PP referred to earlier (I hope) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ex1pGnIMDns

Sabres Of Paradise - Smokebelch II, the song after is Melt by Leftfield, another chill out classic I can't find on Youtube.

The music has hastily been put together to a few random skiing pics taken off my mobile phone a few years ago.

:D

Great pics too!

I want to be skiing through the Alps with a bright blue sky and Smokeblech II on my ipod.. (drifts off into reverie....)

An absolute classic from Air:

All I need - Air

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tqBCOBRcMqc

Not too sure about the voiceovers on the video, but a class song nonetheless..

PetalP you absolute star!!!

I have just watched the "Should we really stop flying?" programme that has just been on BBC2 (which put some interesting points across incidentally) and this song was played and I couldn't for the life of me remember who it is, I have been searching chill out albums etc to no avail, I then remembered the place to come to find out, I was gonna try and describe it to you and ask for your help but you already have it here as the first song in the chill out section!

Classic tune. ;)
Many thanks :D

was checking out music from Sarah Nixey (used to be in Black Box Recorder) on youtube, and found this song.

Anyone remember Ghosts by Japan? Here is a cover of this song:

Ghosts - Infantjoy feat Sarah Nixey

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MvH8kowZJbo

Atmospheric, minimalist electronica.. and Sarah sings so nicely once again.. :)

Portishead were great! Most people seem to think that their first album is the only one worth having, but their second album is very good too.

Here is track from their second album:

Only You - Portishead

http://www.dailymotion.com/visited/search/...ishead-only-you

Creepy, atmospheric.. and a video directed by Chris Cunningham (the one that directs really creepy videos, e.g. Aphex Twin :yikes: oh, also Frozen by Madonna, All is Full of love by Bjork) Has a great filmic feel to it :ok:

trisco - October 1, 2007 01:41 PM (GMT)
Not sure we would put this in here but I love the tune..

4 Hero - Les Fleurs
Think originally was Minnie Ripperton??

Moby - Porcelain

Moby - Natural Blues

Moby - why does my heart feel so bad?
