Title: "Old Skool Tunes"
Description: Hip Hop, Club Classics (80s/90s)

petalp - September 2, 2006 09:47 PM (GMT)
Was at a party earlier in the week where the music played was simply downloaded by track, and people just took turns on the laptop to queue up a playlist when the mood took them! Modern times, etc, etc..

Anyway, here's an old school classic that was played that evening. It still sounds fantastic :)

Oh I LOVE that! :D Class piece of stuff and very dancable. Quite retro fo rit's time in a way. reminds me of the first few discos I went to at Uni in 1988- and I recall this bloke who had a particular way of dancing to it. :D Featured Caryn Wheeler i think?

Anyway that song evokes this memory every time - I met this guy Jim (the one who liked it and danced to it) and I fancied him from day one but I was attached and that was that and assumed he wasn't interested. He actaully came from the same town too. I split from my partner, and Jim was very good to me and we stayed mates. We used to dance to this song quite a bit. He left Uni, we stayed in touch a bit then he got a girlfriend who frankly I did not think was his type but hey, and we lost touch. A couple of years later and I am out at the Uni disco again and Soul 2 Soul comes on and who should crop up but Jim! :D Well we had a really good night, he confessed to being bored rigid by his GF and said he'd fancied me all along as in for like abotu 4 years! roflmao But stupid me had a boyfriend again but I would rather have gone of with Jim, so I agreed to go out with him and invited him round to mine. I told him I had to get rid of the other bloke though, he was fine about that, adn he was going to dump his gf! Anyway my official bf was away and I were having a great time and then shock horror in walks my bf! :o I could understand him being very angry, but frankly I had had enough of him and he knew it so no surprises. He caused such a scene that Jim thought he'd better leave. And he said he would contact me, which he did, but it was tricky to meet up and we lost touch again. Eventually I saw him after a few years and he was married to the boring girlfriend and had kids! :D Teh fool should have stuck with me for a while eh? :D

Hey SB!

Great story.. looks like Jim missed the boat there, eh!! :D

The Soul II Soul record is just class. I downloaded the proper video on my pc, and enjoy it as much now as I did way back when.. :)

Here's another one that I played recently from around that time, that I think is also a classic:

Wicked Game - Chris Isaak

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I3TvjXC_oMk

Quite haunting, and great slide guitar (cue wistful reverie..!)

Wicked Game - Chris Isaak

Yes it is funny how music can evoke such memories eh? Of course he missed the boat ;) He isn't the first to do so and he may not be the last! :D

Wicked Game - well yes I love that, it is haunting. I have it on some compilation album (it comes on after Venus in Furs by Velvet Underground). My best mate LOVEs it and always make sme play it when she comes over. Wonder what happened to Chris Isaak?

petalp - September 3, 2006 03:14 PM (GMT)
There was recently a programme of one hit wonders in the US on TV (quite different to a UK version in many respects) which featured Wicked Game, and he was interviewed. I think that he plays in small clubs in the USA now, kind of Jazz/ Blues places. Time has been kind to him too, still looks good..

Some General Information, for starters.

Please include a link to youtube (or another site if possible) for the song that you wish to include on this thread, to enable people to hear the song/ see the video.

When posting your link, please include the title of the song and the name of the artist along with your link.

It would be great if you could also write a bit about why you love a particular song, or perhaps there is a funny story to tell about it, or maybe it brings back other good memories?

Also, if you wish to include a link to a great site relating to this style of music, then please add it to this thread!

I shall write a little about this section, and also post an example to start this off

petalp - November 23, 2006 10:53 PM (GMT)
Remember those days of Rave Culture in the late 80s?

Or maybe you recall those boombox early days of hip hop as it gradually grew into the higly polished megabucks genre that it is now, before all of that gangsta posturing?

Well, this section is for you! :D

On the hiphop side, am thinking of Public Enemy, Eric B and Rankim and NWA as examples.. On the club side, The Shamen, A Guy Called Gerald, Njoi, Hardcore Uproar :)
