Here's an all time indie favourite:

Kool Thing - Sonic Youth

Love the song and the video!! The guest vocalist is Chuck D from Public Enemy..

Just read that this was meant to be a dig at LL Cool J..

More of a subtle/ oblique dug than those Tupac/ Biggie spats, thankfully...

Hives - Hate To Say I Told You So

Here's a really obscure indie one that maybe only SG will like (and even that is just a maybe). I was really surprised to see it on youtube:

The Drum - Bongwater

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P5asohoiR6E

It's from about 1990. It's very lo-fi, very rough (and probably would be a good song for a band to cover!). The video is just bizarre.. But I love this song, and I don't think that I've met anyone else who has also known it..

petalp - September 3, 2006 01:25 PM (GMT)
Music by Scandinavian bands (in addition to the Hives link posted by Oblivion):

You and Me Song - The Wannadies (from Sweden)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GMOLoV1nlmk

I like 'Might be Stars' as well, but couldn't find that one..

'Sick and Tired - The Cardigans (from Sweden)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8paAUN6lC3I

Of course plenty to choose from here, but went for one of their earlier songs..

So Easy - Royksopp (from Norway)

Difficult to find this on youtube! Again, it's on itunes..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u81cbUlbOG4

This is the only place where I could find it.. the first 30 seconds is probably enough..

Hoppipola - Sigur Ros (Iceland)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CtV7J7_2R50

The BBC have caught onto this one, big time..

petalp - September 3, 2006 01:27 PM (GMT)
Oops.. missed out the link for Sambassadeur..

David Bowie.. He looked like he was from a different planet back in the 70s ..and judging by his narcotic intake, probably felt like he was on another planet! roflmao

I had forgotten all about Sick and Tired by the Cardigans! Brings back so many memories.. fantastic tune! I have it on vinyl but do not have a record player anymore so I may have to break out the old Limewire to find it! :P

Hey Trisco!! :D

It is a great song.. very summery, very poppy!!

Funny that you mentioned vinyl.. Yesterday I finally got myself to this fabulous little second hand book and record store that I had been meaning to go to in ages. Whilst you are browsing, they can make you a cup of tea or coffee and give you a cake too, as it is also a cafe.. all very civilised. They also had a record deck where you can play any record that you weren't sure about.. It's very unpretentious too, which is always good..

The shop had its own pace, and time just seemed to slow down.. was a very pleasant way to spend a Saturday afternoon.

Ooh, I hadn't seen the video.. really enjoyed it!! :ok:

One of the Concretes songs thatI mentioned has a video that is very similar (well, maybe copies Royksopp!)

Chosen One - The Concretes

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1ujDYOIptg

I really like them, but I do think that her voice can be a bit of an acquired taste.. :)

I quite like her voice, slightly Cranberrie'ish do you think?

Where is this record store/cafe/dj booth by the way? lol

Oh, the record shop is called 'Elvis Shakespeare'. It's on Leith Walk in Edinburgh. It has a website:

http://www.elvisshakespeare.com/index.php

So can even browse from the comfort of your pc! :)

I hope that it's doing well, as it hasn't been around for that long.. And hopefully shops like that will crop up in other cities (if not already) as it is such a nice place to have.

petalp - September 3, 2006 03:02 PM (GMT)
Yes, there is a bit of a Cranberry thing going on there!

Do you know Mazzy Star? I think that her voice sounds a bit like the them too.

I just checked out the Elvis Shakespeare shop for Cardigans records and found this one:

"I Need Some Fine Wine And You Need To Be Nicer"

What a great title for a song!!!

I hadn't heard of this before.. and it's on youtube too..

I Need Some Fine Wine And You Need To Be Nicer - The Cardigans

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jlHNh1Oj7TU

It's the rockier Cardigans.. Hmm.. sounds nice enough.. might be a grower :) I've tended to prefer their first 2 albums, their poppier stuff.

Ah, now you're talking!! I loved Pulp.. Saw them about, oh tons of times, all over the place! Leeds, Blackpool, London, Glasgow, Reading..

I love these videos:

Babies (the first video) - Pulp

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7T_ucNb7GqU

I like Jarvis' dancing in this one.. :)

I remember them perofrming this on TOTP and Jarvis opening his jacket with the message 'I hate wet wet wet' ni it... the scamp...

And this video has got some good visuals

Disco 2000 - Pulp

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=61ThRHYFQvU

We all queued up at midnight to buy a Different Class as our local record store opened especially for this.. ah, happy days indeed..

SuperBRAT - October 2, 2006 11:05 PM (GMT)
Oh I love Pulp. Go tthe pop/indie cross over perfect, and a bit 80s retro too. They were quite rough sounding before that though (my mate saw the several times before they were famous) and then they went back to that, which i dont; really like. Still, two really great albums. My faves are Lipgloss and Pink Glove (the latter sadly not on youtube) form his and Hers. Pink Glove s just such a great closing track. "it's hard to believe that you go for that stuff, all those babydoll nighties and synthetic fluff, it fits you real good, yeah it fits you ok, yeah wear your pink glove baby, you got it on the wrong way!"

I love Lipgloss, and Babies still really does it for me :)

Agreed! The thread has certainly grown much bigger than I thought it would when I first started it.. we need an indie section, a funk section, hip hop, old skool dance, rock, etc, etc!!

SuperBRAT - October 3, 2006 09:48 PM (GMT)
Yeah and a freestyle section I guess! :D I wonder if we could ask Nick for a Music forum and then put threads in it? I doubt he would mind. Teh movie buffs coudl do a movies one too maybe. An idea for a comp after Dav's is done and other things. :D If we had different types it will save peopel havign to wade through a thread where they don't like all of it.

Tiem to resurrect this thread.. :)

Favourite Blur songs (in no particular order):

1. To the End

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RvCIPpWFo7Y

2. Popscene (yay!! :yahoo: ) Vid directed by Jarvis Cocker :)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HlY6rmQfNt4

3. Music is my Radar

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RaQXqKS9Z4I

4. Chemical World

5. For Tomorrow

9. Song 2

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJ-6xGaETHQ

10. Girls and Boys

If I had to pick a top 5 from those, then I'd say:

1. Beetlebum (just a brilliant song)
2. To the End (a classic - featuring the wonderful Laetitia from the fab Stereolab)
3. Chemical World (so ahead of their time with this)
4. For Tomorrow (likewise!)
5. Popscene (remember having many a dance to this!)

Modern Life is Rubbish is their best album by far.. :yahoo:

Great great singles band. :ok:

great live band too, saw them many a time (including Mile End, Rollercoaster tour, etc, etc.)
