Title: "Indie Schmindie"
Description: Current and Recent Indie Songs

petalp - September 2, 2006 09:15 PM (GMT)
Ok.. (thinks) just where to start?

Earlier this week I went to see a singer called Imogen Heap.. Very talented, great voice, seems to be able to play just about any instrument.. Also mildly eccentric in the great British tradition of musical artists..! She does mainly electronic music (had about 6 different keyboards!)

I think that this song is quite well known.. also I think that her music has featured in numerous TV shows. The OC and 6 Feet Under are two that spring to mind. Her film credits include Shrek 2 (the cover of Holding Out for a Hero?!!) and Chronicles of Narnia..

Anyway, it's quite an unusual song.. this is a live performance.. I love the vocoder stuff... :D

Here's one for SG, if he checks out the thread some time:

Rebellion (Lies) - Arcade Fire (on Jools Holland)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=42g4T_tZPTA

And one for Alli, as we once talked about Australian bands:

Low Happening - Howling Bells (another 'live' performance)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2GyDNZHqivg

Reminiscent of the Throwing Muses (or perhaps Belly?) if anyone remembers them..

Here's a studio version of one of their songs (don't think that the Bollywood Dancers work well in the video tho..):

Setting Sun - Howling Bells

Hi SG! Yeah, many of her songs are great.. I really enjoyed seeing her 'live', recommend it highly, and would definitely see her again.. I saw her with a friend of mine who is a singer, and she could't believe some of the technical stuff she was doing with laptops, all different types of synths, mixing desk, grand piano, an african echo board (I can't remember the name).. She did some amazing accapello stuff where she recorded her voice in some echo box(?), handclaps for rhythm, all building up to a fully fledged song.. really impressive stuff.. :)

SG, the PATG video is really unusual, isn't it!!

I've heard the Razorlight song on the radio, very catchy..

Which is the one that has the line 'you can have it all if you want to'? that is them, isn't it? Memory's gone blank on that one..

The Killers remind me of 80s music! I guess the same could be said for a lot of indie music out right now!

Well her songs have been used twice to fonish a season on the OC

Hide & Seek was used at the end of Season 2 when Trey got shot

Hallelujah (original by Otis Reading, covered also by Jeff Buckley which i think is another awsome song) at the end of series 3 when MArissa dies...

Nice song WB.. and is this from the OC too??

The opening bit reminds me very much of the Eurythmics..

Also reminds me of the electroclash stuff that was also very 80s influenced..

Here's one by one of the supposed 'Electroclash' bands... and quite an unusual video too..

Destroy Everything You Touch - Ladytron

Enjoyed the video (once it finally loaded up!!)

Actually, speaking of loaded.. I once read that Loaded by Primal Scream was Monica Seles' favourite song back in the early 90s.. monica in indie dance kid shocker!

I have the video recorded on good old-fashioned videotape, but surprisingly it's not on youtube..

I'm joining this discussion late, but got to say there's a song that's really grabbed me this year: its called Glorious, by a band called Captain. Their website is www.captaintheband.com/website.htm. Really infectious tune, and the observant amongst you may notice that the opening few seconds was used by the BBC during their Wimbledon coverage when they were rounding up all the matches!

Let me know if anyone else likes this song, and other songs by this band - will probably just be me, as I tend to have a v individual taste of music!!

Yes I liked it. I am not sure if I would buy thier album but they sound like a quality band. Two weeks ago they were featured on Radio 2 actaully.

SB, I heard that session too!! I'm usually a BBC6/ XFM listener, and just happened to tune in to R2 that evening. It was late night, wasn't it, maybe Janice Long? They sounded like a decent bunch of people too..

MrI, thanks for the recommendation! :) I shall check out their website.

Not sure if your tastes in music are so arcane/ esoteric.. there are quite a few rather individualistic choices on this thread, which have been fascinating to check out..

Trying to think who they sound like, a bi t70s a bit 80s? Coudlnt; listen to that all night though, it is a bit tuneless to me, and I woudl prefer Iron Maiden for the thrashing stuff! :D Or punk.
