Title: Fed & Nadal pull out

Ken001 - May 15, 2006 01:06 PM (GMT)
Perhaps not a surprise, but they've both pulled out of Hamburg, citing exhaustion. Don't blame them, though the tournament organisers will be a bit gutted. Who's going to win it now???

I'm not surprised. Are Nalbandian and Almagro both still in? They've been looking good here lately. Coria continues his slump. I haven't seen the final result, but last I checked, he was trailing in his first round match.

Ken001 - May 15, 2006 01:39 PM (GMT)
Yep, Coria's gone out in 3 sets to Djokovic. Haven't checked the df count yet :mw:

Nick Havoc - May 15, 2006 01:43 PM (GMT)
OK. I checked the draw and don't see a Nalbandian or Almagro. Hmm . . . It's a pretty open field, I think. I don't see a strong favorite, but there are several who might win it, if they have a good week: Gonzales, Safin, Gaudio, Monfils . . .

...but Monfils is going out in the first round

Nick Havoc - May 15, 2006 01:59 PM (GMT)
He just might.

SuperBRAT - May 15, 2006 02:14 PM (GMT)
I'm not surprised they pulled out either but it is a shame. Would they nto have expected that there might be a tough final yesterday though, becasue I think it was very likely - although maybe not as long as it lasted. I think it looks a bit bad on them in a way, does anyone think Nadal did it cos he was worried about ending his winning streak?

scolios - May 15, 2006 02:42 PM (GMT)
Well, i'm glad that BOTH of them have withrawn at least, and actually, I think it makes good sense, even though it will be disappointing for the spectators. But it DOES give other players a chance. What about Robredo, btw, or Haas? Wouldn't either of them have a chance of winning?

Pebs - May 15, 2006 05:14 PM (GMT)
Not surprised to see them both gone either.... would love to see Blake go on and get this....

petalp - May 15, 2006 05:24 PM (GMT)
I'm not surprised to hear that both of them have pulled out. It merely proves the blindingly obvious that both of them have RG as their ultimate goal. Also showed how much they put into yesterday's match.

Mind you, the way things were going, them both withdrawing seemed to be the only way that anyone else could win something.

Could be Nalbandian's big chance? Or maybe Gasquet if he hits form?

The draw is far more unpredictable without the 2 winning machines rolling over everyone in sight. I noticed that some Safin predictions (hope springs eternal..) may have already bit the dust..

Nick Havoc - May 15, 2006 06:30 PM (GMT)
Well, Nalbandian is not playing and Gasquet is out first round to Vliegen. I'm thinking maybe this will be a good chance of Gonzo. A real darkhorse might be Mathieu. He's pulled a few upsets here and there, but never put it together for a title of any significance.

Gasquet OUT? I am sorry, I thought he was resuming his old form. But there have been so many surprises on clay this season! It's Coria who my heart aches for.

However, a chance for Gonzo. Genie will do his nut if Gonzo wins this. I so hope he does. Genie is the most wonderful supporter I've ever met (he beats Ava, which takes some doing) and his warm and zaney enthusiasm has enlisted me on the side of Gonzo too, although I've never even seen the man. C'mom Gonzo - for Genie

scolios - May 15, 2006 06:46 PM (GMT)
Hey, everyone, look! I've got one of those avator things, too. Dav got it for me. It only took three attempts for me to set it up roflmao

Hi, petalp, I've just seen that you're a fed supporter, too! Happy to meet you!

Hello Scolios!

Nice to meet you too! Have seen and enjoyed your posts on the beeb site :)

And I approve of your avatar! Yes, I'm indeed a fan of Roger too..

You know, it took me a while to figure out the avatar thing.. Me, I thought that an avatar was a heavenly body that appears on earth in human form.. How silly of me to think that! :

petalp - May 15, 2006 07:19 PM (GMT)
Agreed Nick and Scolios on the Gonzo front..

Also agreed that Genie would do his nut if Gonzo were to win.. Can you imagine the postings?!! His girlfriend would be in for a super bonus evening, if memories of how he chooses to celebrate a Gonzo win are anything to go by :D

I like Genie too.. his postings always have a good energy to them. Gonzo is worth seeing play; he gave Fed a good workout at SW19 last year. Hopefully he will prevail at Hamburg.

Shame about Gasquet being out already. He has the most sublime backhand. And I wish that Marat would hit some sustainable form too..

:o I spelled it wrong: avatar!!!!!!!!!

It takes me for ever to work anything out that's technological, petalp, trial and error, that's my method - and the errors seem to prevail!

On no. I've just seen that Safin is out of Hamburg too. Anyone see that post on the beeb describing his off-court behaviour? Seems that he's taken a leaf out of Jeltsin's book and is going for the booze in a big way, and otherwise just relying on "natural talent". Unfortunately "natural talent" has to be combined with sheer grinding hard work. A pity. when he's on form, safin is awe-inspiring.

I checked the beeb site, and couldn't find it. Do you have a link for it?

It doesn't surprise me though. Much of what I had suspected was confirmed by Tursunov's rather entertaining blog.

It is a real shame as when Marat is on his game he is fantastic to watch. The way things are going though, he and many other players in the top 10 are in danger of being left behind by the top 2. Out of all of the others, I do think that he has the game to seriously challenge both Roger anmd Rafa..

Here's hoping that he turns it around. I did see an interview where he said that he needs to work harder, so he knows that he's letting himself down. Hopefully he will come good :)

Its very disappointing for the organisers of the tournament that so many top players have pulled out. Do you think they see it as a lesser one than Rome for example? It makes you wonder

I know, and it's ridiculous that there are two weeks inbetween Monte Carlo and Rome, where smaller tournaments are played, why not move Barcelona or Munich to this week?

Petalp, sorry I couldn't reply last night. The bit about safin was in one of the threads, not on the beeb's news place, and I'm afraid I can't remember which thread. Sorry! Probably just gossip anyway and maybe not true...

WHERE HAS MY AVATAR GONE? :o :o :o :o :o :o (That's obviously not meant for you, petalp! )
