Almodovar.. I saw Volver recently, and liked it :ok:
Wasn't so keen on Bad Education or Live Flesh.. All about my mother was ok, and Talk to her was pretty good too.
I recall Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown as being great, and Tie me up, tie me down.. but it's been a while since I saw them..
Cyrano de Bergerac was good... though I remember it being so hyped at the time.. and that the ending sequence was sooo drawn out, a bit hammy.. but yes, good French cinema tends to be very good indeed :ok:
Japanese films tend to be bit crazy!! I saw Tampopo and thought it was nuts.
http://imdb.com/title/tt0092048/I loved 'Shall we dance?' though.. I think that hollywood made a lame remake of it..
And I think that Battle Royale has been featured in other sections here.. ;)

Ah.. definitely not the dubbed version!!
There was a Japanese anime film out maybe last year called Spirited Away. It was showing at 2 cinemas within a 10 minute walk from me. If I saw it at the multiplex, it was dubbed, and if I saw it at the other cinema then it was subtitled! In fact I saw the trailer dubbed at the multiplex and then saw the full film at the other cinema with subtitled. I'm glad that I wasn't put off by the dubbed trailer, which just made it feel like pokemon or something!
I don't like dubbed films, as I feel that they just destroy the feel of a film.. but then again I know that a lot of people don't like subtitles.. I am completely fine with them, and sometimes wish that English langauge films had subtitles too as I have struggled to understand what people have said! DVD's are great for having that option.
And crouching tiger hidden dragon is a great film. :ok: There is also 'Hero' and 'House of Flying Daggers' which have revived that genre too :)

I'd pick those as the best Kurosawa films as well. He was a geat fan of Shakespeare and apart from Throne of Blood which you mentioned, Ran was based on King Lear. I believe he also made a film based on Hamlet but I can't remember the details.
Seven Samurai was remade as "The Magnificent Seven" and also inspired the Indian film "Sholay" which I think still ranks as the biggest hit in Indian cinema.
http://imdb.com/title/tt0073707/Yojimbo was remade as "Fistful of Dollars", there was also a sequel called Sanjuro which as with most sequels wasn't as good as the first one.
The Hidden Fortress was also quite good, about a general helping a princess across enemy territory helped by two peasants who provide a bit of comic relief. If that plot sounds familiar, its because George Lucas has confirmed that it was an influence on Star Wars and especially R2D2 and C3PO who are based on the 2 peasants. Toshiro Mifune who played the general was apparently considered for the part of Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Silent Movie - December 1, 2006 08:48 PM (GMT)
I recently saw Czech Dream (Èeský sen), a documentary about 2 students in a film school who pull of a hoax on the Czech Public on the opening of a fake hypermarket.
http://imdb.com/title/tt0402906/I know it sounds a bit odd but I really did enjoy it. Especially when the 2 students (disguised as the managers) were being shouted at by this old Czech guy because he was fooled by the hoax xD
The rest were surprisingly philosophical about the whole thing. You wouldn't get that in most other Western countries :D
Anyone else seen this?

I saw Das leben der Anderen Saturday and I must say, what an impressive film! Not the type that I'd buy on DVD, but it's just great.
I love the ending too..."Nein. Es ist für mich.“... :)
