Breakfast at Tiffany's? :o
Oh nooooo!!!
Audrey Hepburn was completely miscast as Holly Golightly... Truman Capote was most unhappy with this. It should have been Monroe.. And having Audrey Hepburn completely airbrushed the shadier aspects of Holly Golightly (she's a prostitute..) And she couldn't have been a less convincing 'girl from the country' if she tried. I blame film studio pressure (just as in the same way that Eliza Doolittle should have been Julie Andrews..)
George Peppard as well? Hmm.. couldn't act.. :(
And then Mickey Rooney as the Japanese Neighbour was hugely offensive...
And they changed the ending of the film to that of the book..
Having said that, the image of Audrey Hepburn with her breakfast at the window of the famous jeweller's, and her look, is iconic. And it overlooks the fact that she was returning from sleeping with a 'client'!
Moon River is a classic song, and Audrey sings it so well in the film..
A great Audrey Hepburn romance is Roman Holiday, for which she won an oscar... a delightful film

Ye but I haven't read the book so I don't care about any of that
My english teacher said Breakfast at Tiffany's isn't even Capote's best work so I expect it will be a while before I get round to reading it, and I've gotta say, even though Audrey doesn't really come off as a prozzy, she does present a more sordid side to the character as well...
I did include Roman Holiday I don't know why I didn't put it in Romance though...
EDIT: Oh ye that's right I put it in Comedy as it always makes me laugh  the romance is very implicit though, a very good film :D
petalp - November 25, 2006 01:51 PM (GMT)
But still, even having not read the book... Mickey Rooney.... George Peppard... There's just no chemistry between Hepburn and Peppard imo..
I just don't think it's Audrey Hepburn's best romantic film, even though it's her most famous..
There's also Sabrina, another really good romantic film of hers.. And she looks even more stunning in that than Breakfast at Tiffany's..

ye Sabrina and Roman Holiday are better...
George Peppard is very lacklustre I must admit :(
Why didn't they cast a better, bigger hollywood star?

Give me Gregory Peck rather than Hannibal from the 'A' team, any day!! roflmao

Ye I was thinking Gregory Peck would've been perfect for the role, anything he touches seems to turn to gold :D

I haven't seen the film, but I heard that it's a bit racist.
Romance?
Roman holiday I suppose :D
SerenaW19 - November 25, 2006 06:09 PM (GMT)
Ye but racism is everywhere if you look hard enough though  One of the problems with living in a very globalised multi-cultural world.
dl04 - November 25, 2006 06:12 PM (GMT)
Baz Lurhman's Romeo+Juliet- one of the best romance revamps of all time IMO. It's so unique and symbolic of the characters, eg the outfits at the banquet are there to represent the characters characteristics. It's so visionary and the soundtrack is awesome. Claire Danes shines in that film
SerenaW19 - November 25, 2006 06:13 PM (GMT)
I wasn't sure which version you were talking about until you said Claire Danes :D

Yes, but Mickey Rooney's Japanese guy is just awful, SW, and I don't think that this is being overly sensitive about the race issue! It smacked of ignorance and was hugely insulting.. and remember that this film was made in a time when segregation was prevalent in US culture, pre-civil rights movments, and not the multiculural integrated world of nowadays..

I'm not sure if this hsould actually go here, but has anyone seen Secretary with Maggie Gyllenhall and James Spader?
I watched it and thought it was such a strange romance movie, but a romance movie nonetheless. It kinda got to the end and I felt really choked up at it......was really well made, but it was never going to get much publicity simply because it's about a taboo subject.

I can play that on the piano :D
I don't want to sound immodest, but it sounds really nice, im sure it's the beautiful flowing music rather than my playing though.

I have weird taste in romance movies I know, but does Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind count as romance? It's very bitter-sweet but i really liked that movie - very good and brilliant performances from kate winslet and Jim Carrey.
timmadigan - November 27, 2006 08:07 PM (GMT)
Romance is hard to categorize just on it's own but here's a shot of some I've not yet mentioned
Casablanca - 2nd fav movie after Singing in the Rain
Princess Bride - ...Hold it, Grandpa. Is this a kissing book?
Baz's Trilogy (Strictly Ballroom, Moulon Rouge, Romeo & Juliet)
Shop Around the Corner / You've got Mail
And whatever the current gf wants to watch.

I was gonna have a rant about this thing about women and chick flicks.....but i can't be bothered. roflmao i suspect my choices may speak for themselves about what i think about romance ;)
SuperBRAT - November 27, 2006 10:27 PM (GMT)
I can't think of a romantic movie to add! Cant; think of one I have seen or liked roflmao I'm nto unromantic, but a lot of thos elabelled as romances are too much. You need and edge of tragedy in there, so let's go for Sid and Nancy (Sid Viscious and Nancey Spongen) roflmao

theres a film I've always wanted to see. I take it you recommend it then?
I dont mind the odd chick flick - or romance as we seem to be billing it here! - but I'd rather have something to gross me out or make me jump :D

Eternal sunshine is very very good -i really enjoyed it. it's got a top cast (other than the two leads you've got Tom Wilkinson, Kirsten Dunst and Elijah Wood) and it's relatively short IIRC, but just so well done.
Other romance-esque movies, Garden State is very very good. Written by, starring and directed by Zach Braff (he from Scrubs the TV series) with natalie Portman and Peter Saarsgard, it's really well done. I'm not sure if it should really go in this category, it could just as easily go in drama, but i think it's worth a watch.
And Pebs, if you want an odd one, check out Secretary - an S&M love story.....

not sure what that says about me or you DJ - but might give it a look ;)
