Horror - well dont; get ne started, I like so many of this genre it's untrue. i will watch ANYTHING horror once even if ti is dross. I love it all from the b&w oldies to the more modern stuff, but if ti gets TOO sick and gratuious count me out - i have no desire to see hsotel and I hate action horror generally, although I love a bit of 70's stalk and slach liek Halloween.
Here's modern must see japanese movie even if you don't like horror, watch it. It might nto suit the squeamish but it does have a message and is quite bodl and exciting. I onyl recently got in to Japanese stuff and it was well worth it. They do great movies like Ringu (Ring) and Ju-On (The Grudge) so much better than the American hollywood remakes.
BATTLE ROYALE
Directed by Kinji Fukasaku (2000)
Starring Takeshi Kitano, Tatsuya Fujiwara, Aki Maeda, Taro Yamamoto, Masanobu Ando, Kou Shibasaki, Chiaki Kuriyama
If you want to just watch this movie and knwo nothing about it, dont; read this!
This film had me gripped form the start. There is a great premise behind it, that dissaffected youth cause problems in society and somethign needs to be done about it. However, what does happen is ridiculously extreme. As a symbolic punishment, a class of school kids a year are selected at random to play Battle Royale - a game where they fight to the death on an island, literally, until there is onyl oen survivor who is the winner of the game. There are some great touches and ideas to make it even more horrible for the children, whcih i wont; give away, but it actually frightened me to think what if that really happened? What is scary is the matter-of-fact way that thsi is all dealt with, with the news reports of the winner fo the game before at the beginning, the way that all the kids are numbered and the death toll read out, the weapons handed out and the scene where the rules of the game are given out by a Japanese model in army gear on a video, tryignt o make it seem liek a fun game just left me speechless. :o The teacher in charge of the class it totally ruthless. It has all the elements of one of the American high school horrors, like kids having crushes on each other, wanting to be cool and distrusting adults, but it is miles away from the norm. It does explore a lot of issues of trust, friendship and competition among youngsters and is very sad in parts. Some find it funny and slapstick, I personally didn't laugh but I see why others might. And it does have that sentimental message spinning element that just pops up out of the blue in these Japanese movies, but that makes it quite interesting.
I think the direction and dleivery is excellent, and the death scenes are awesomely shot. There's a super performance from the girl who really tries to play the game and turns out quite a psycho. There are some good twists, and even if you know what it is about liek I did it will still surprise you. I don't think much of many modern horrors, but this one I had to give 10/10 and thought it was amazing. Watch early so as you don't fall asleep reading the subtitles :D

Glad you like it. :) Well it is supposed to be horror, you coudl also call it sc-fi I guess as it does have a 'what if' premise. There are so many types of horror though, liek psychological, supernatural/haunted house stuff, relgious base like Omen/Excorcist, fantasy stuff like Vampires, slasher/psycho movies and some cross over into other genres too. Sci-fi and horror are insperable in some movies say Alien. It is hard but I woudl call it horror, i tdoes have horrid stuff in it. :)

love a good horror - be it of any kind...
and recommendations put on this thread to watch would be cool :)
SerenaW19 - November 23, 2006 06:49 PM (GMT)
Alien is basically a horror film but it's setting is VERY sci-fi so it put it in there :)
I think the fact it's rated 18 shows it's very horror-like.
SuperBRAT - November 23, 2006 08:59 PM (GMT)
Here's one you might like to try - Odishon (Audition) Japan 1999
director : Miike Takashi
It's quite wierd and starts off all sedate and slow, and then there is the twist. A guy is auditioning women for a role, but they think it is a movie role BUT actually he is looking for a wife. And he gets more than he bargained for ...... sick and disturbing in places, but for some reason I found it absorbing and it was different. There is a seriously scary bit towards the end.

awwww dl, you are such a sweetie!
watched the remake of the Texas Chainsaw recently - much better than original I thought and had a good couple of 'oops, I just jumped outta my pants' type moments.
Saw Silent Hill recently - utter bilge - do not watch ever!
Also, I did see Hostel - like watching two badly made movies squidged together - porn v gross out - and it just didnt work.
If you want to see something that makes you go :hide: but has a good story - Saw and Saw II are my recommendations.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre - Tobe Hooper (1976?ish)
Despite what has bene said I think this movie is absolute class. yes it is low budget and some fo the acting is dodgy and the effects not as good as now but it really did scare me. It's such a shock when they open the door of the house and out comes Leatherface with his axe or whatever it is. The terro really is terro to me, nothign to laugh about at all, and wat si scary is that that styff coudl happen (and is runoured ot have accordign to my mate form texas). You do get incestuous and backward families in the middle of nowhere and that is what makes it so scary as the family who murder peopel have no sense of morality or feeling. Hanging peope on meathooks is shocking, and when Gunner Hansen (yes he was huge as they had to have a man nig enough to wield a REAL chainsaw) runs after Marion Burns at the end with the Chainsaw it is just totally mad.
I thought the modern one was rubbish, it was predicable to me and captured none of the depraved menace and manicness of the original. I think Tobe Hooper was genius in directing that, and it was banned for 25 years. look how many modern movies it has spurned though, Cabin Fever, adn the other recent one (I forget the name) whcih is very similar, and there's one called Gruesome? Weekend whicj is the same story basically.
If you liek Tobe Hooper - Eaten Alive (about 1975)
A motel in the middle of nowhere with a psycho redneck who keeps a very large crocodile in his pool. I watched it last week, it is quite a shocker and nto one I woudl watch again for pleasure, it is quite nasty and very scary but if you liek those kind of movies, you'll love it.
Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 - Tobe Hooper (1970s?)
I hear ti is really good, and wonde rif anyone has seen it? I was going to buy it when it was 3.99 in HMV, but seem sto have shot up to 13.99 so no way!

It is VERY scary, it's heavily sci-fi but some of the horror is just so graphic it definitely belongs in here :)

A recommendation
BLACK CHRISTMAS
Bob Clark/Canada 1974
This is a stylish and creepy slasher/suspense movie that was not widely distrubuted until the early 80s to capitalize on the phenomenal success of Halloween and its offspring. However, it predates Halloween by four years, so clearly influenced dozens of slasher films that followed it.
It turns the idea of the perfect Christmas upside down, as a bunch of girls stay behind in their sorority house for the festive college break (inc Olivia hussey and Margot Kidder), only to be stalked by a dangerous psychopath. His tactics range from making obscene phone calls from their house-mother's phone, to stalking the terrified boarders with sharp objects and murderous intent. It has an aggressive style that generates some very original shocks for the time that have been much copied and there is a good surprise ending.
I watched it having seen dozens of these movies already, and can see how pioneering it was and also found it enjoyable and creepy. it's hardly ever on TV though, I've not seen it scheduled on terrestrial or freeview since about 1999 when Channel 4 did a season of Christmas horror. :)

didnt he open it with.. um, a chainsaw in his hand?? he seemed permently attached to it in the film...
I think I preferred the remake because it seemed to follow more of a storyline and it really did make me jump. They changed the ending though, so wasnt sure how it was supposed to end... cause, I also heard it was based on a real life event - kept meaning to look it up but never did.
thanks for the recommendations though - am always on the lookout for new ones to get out, so keep em coming! :ok:

I've no idea where to put this film: horror (it scared me to death), crime/mystery (the twist at the end) or drama.....so i'm gonna put it here, simply 'cos i was absolutely terrified by parts of this movie:

Not sure what has happened to my ability to reply and quote here
Jo - thanks for giving me Bruce Campbell's name. So what else is he in? I am sure I have seen him more than once. :)
Haven't seen Bubba Ho Tep? and have avoided th eothers as I find horror movies with hug eHollywood stars in them tend nto to work for me (well rarely). The unknowns seem to fit the movie better. And really, Nicole Kidman is not my cuppa tea. Although, dare I say it, :D she was pretty horrifying in the last movie I saw with he rin it - Moulin Rouge! roflmao Sorry MR fans :D Although I quite like the movie - What Lies Beneath - the big star cast makes it less scary than it could be IMO. Now you said that though Petalp, I may watch it when it is next available.
Speaking of big stars v unknowns in horror flicks, I wont; watch the Grudge cos I will just think Buffy the Vampire Slayer, have the proper orignal Ju-On anyway, but what does anyone think of the remake? I heard it was rubbish but dotn; know...

I didnt realise he had done American Gothic.... that is a fab programme - I watched it when it first came out, loved Sherrif Lucas (much scarier than when he was the midnight caller (I think it was the same guy)). They are showing it on ITV3 again and I keep missing it :(
