What do people think have been the greatest ironies or possibly just even surprises in tennis over the years?

Conchita Martinez winning her only slam on her worst surface? (Grass)

After being hailed as the dominator for the next ten years both Martina Hingis and Serena Williams then seemed to fade away? (It hasn't even been ten years since Hingis dominated yet)

That Serena's second slam came on her supposedly 'worst' surface?

Steffi's statement about Martina having many more years to win the French after their 1999 Final?

I can't remember who actually made the comment; but someone saying that Steffi Graf was just like hundreds of other young girls in america and was nothing special (this was in the early 80's), was it Pam Shriver?

Can you think of anymore tennis ironies?

How about that the queen of chokers Gabriela Sabatini came within a few wins of not only beating Graf and Seles to the number one spot but is one of the few people to manage to beat Steffi in a slam final?

Oh yes, I suppose it is ironic that they ended up together, especially considering they are the ONLY two people in history to have won all four Grand Slams and an Olympic Gold Medal :)

Mauresmo labelled a choker then ends up with morre slams than supposed multi-slam winner Kim.

Mary and Jennifer both winning their Slams on the slowest surfaces, the Australian Open and Frecnh Open.

Federer growing up learning on clay.... yet has problems winning on clay. He won everywhere else!

Ironies:

1. Henin Hardenne who's a superb grass court player and volleyer has NOT won a single Wimby yet.

2. Sharapova who's NOT a superb volleyer has a Wimby to her name already.

3. If Jaden Agassi ends up being a figure skater!!!

Its ironis that Mary spent all this year finding her way past injury, and as soon as she hits form-she gets injured :(

Agassi winning his first Slam on grass, was really unexpected especially with two finals at the French as well.

Agassi winning the FO when clearly he should have lost that one had the crowd not intervened and lost it against Courier and Gomez when he was possibly the better player then.

Henmans best shot (IMO) at a slam final coming at RG. (he should have beat Coria that day)

I thought he had a better shot at Wimby in 01, 2 sets to 1 up against goran. Still i agree, henman looked so comfortable at 6-3 4-2, but his serve broke down, ie his first serve percentage plummeted.

It was as if he was thinking, 'im doing great, this time in a an hour i will be the favourite in the FO open final---yikes, pressure, God when cant my legs stop shakin :yikes: '

My favourite tennis irony - that Martina Navratilova was still winning slam titles after the player named after her (Hingis)

That semi-final was amazing in comparison - I always took satisfaction in that she lost her title in the match of the tournament :D

I took evenmore satisafaction in the fact that venus floored her :D
