Title: Federer beats Sampras
Nick Havoc - November 14, 2006 10:24 PM (GMT)
Since there is quite a bit of debate about how Federer compares with Sampras, I thought I'd make a pair of threads; one to list things Fed has accomplished that Pete didn't and another for things Pete accomplished that Fed hasn't (yet?).
So I'll kick it off and add more of your own:
Fed has:
A RG final
8000+ ranking points
10+ titles in three consecutive years
Won the year-end championship without dropping a match
Won Wimbledon/USOpen double in three straight years
12 Masters Series titles
SerenaW19 - November 14, 2006 10:53 PM (GMT)
It's amazing Sampras never won more Master Series really! :o
Another area that Federer is ahead of Sampras is winning streaks and Year win/loss records :)
Big Al - November 14, 2006 10:54 PM (GMT)
They're tied equally at losing one Slam final each, but Sampras never reached the French final. So I give the edge to Federer , who's been in all four.
Sorry  , I forgot all about Sampras's losses in two US finals .
So Fed leads here :ok:

Fed has reached the final of every MS apart from Paris Bercy and that's probably only because he hasn't played there in a few years.
Nick Cica - November 15, 2006 10:37 AM (GMT)
Interesting statistics:
Of Federer's current total of 44 victories, 23 have come in top level events (Grand Slam and Masters): 52%
Of Sampras career total 64, 30 were in top level events: 47%
When Sampras reached 44 tournament victories, only 17 were in top level events: 38%
At this stage of their careers, Federer has clearly been more successful at the top most level of the sport.

Federer leads in consecutive weeks at #1 (where he's now guaranteed to surpass Connors).
Haven't checked, but how about number of matches won in a single year?
Three GS titles in a single year (twice!)
All four GS finals in the same year.
SerenaW19 - November 15, 2006 08:27 PM (GMT)
I think the total weeks at number one is the one to beat though.
Fed still has a way to go on that one.
Brakkus - November 16, 2006 10:50 AM (GMT)
Federer is the first to win Miami-Indian wells double in consecutive years.
Federer has won both singles titles and doubles titles across all four surfaces.
Grass,Clay,Carpet,Hardcourt.

You're right: 89 and counting vs 85.
However (I know this should be in the other section) Sampras did play 101 matches in that year, Federer will play a maximum of 97 this year.

Hmm, but is that latest one really something in which Sampras is ahead? He played more matches, but still won fewer?

That's certainly true. :)

Hi all some additional interesting stats. They point out that FED is already doing better than Pete in some specific area :P :
Pete Sampras best three seasons
1993: 85-16, 8 titles (2 G.S.)
1994: 77-12, 10 titles (2 G.S.)
1995: 72-16, 5 titles (2 G.S.)
Totals: 234-44 (.845), 23 titles (6 G.S.)
when Mr.Federer reached the following records on his three best seasons until now:
2004: 74-6, 11 titles (3 G.S.)
2005: 81-4, 11 titles (2 G.S.)
2006: 82-5, 10 titles (3 G.S.) - With 4 GS finals and at 2 sets (on clay) from a calendar Grand Slam-
Totals: 237-15 (.940), 32 titles (8 G.S.)
Please note as well that:
Ivan Lendl
1985: 84-7, 11 titles (1 G.S.)
1986: 74-6, 9 titles (2 G.S.)
1987: 74-7, 8 titles (2 G.S.)
Totals: 232-20 (.921), 28 titles (5 G.S.)
John McEnroe
1982: 71-9, 5 titles (0 G.S.)
1983: 63-11, 7 titles (1 G.S.)
1984: 82-3, 13 titles (2 G.S.)
Totals: 216-23 (.904), 25 titles (3 G.S.)
Jimmy Connors
1976: 90-7, 12 titles (1 G.S.)
1977: 70-11, 8 titles (0 G.S.)
1978: 66-6, 10 titles (1 G.S.)
Totals: 226-24 (.904), 30 titles (2 G.S.)
Moreover it is interesting to note that:
FED is now at his 146 consecutive weeks as No1 a series started the 02.02.2004.
He is then really near to reach the record of:
1 Jimmy Connors (USA) 160 weeks between 19.06.1974 - 23.08.1977
2 Ivan Lendl (CZE) 157 weeks between 09.09.1985 - 12.09.1988
Ciao B)

My only question is will Federer break the record of consecutive weeks at number one set for men and women by Steffi Graf which is 186 Weeks!!! :o
I know we normally keep mens and womens tennis separate for these sorts of things. But it seems interesting to me as Fed is in line to break the mens record to see if he can break the overall record by Steffi, which seems a real possibility, and quite frankly I never thought anyone would come close to it. Man or woman

I would say, most likely, especially if he goes on to win this Masters Cup Title.
That record would come up before the US Open next year, so he'll be carrying points from USO, Madrid, Basel and Masters Cup, plus whatever he earns up to that point in '07. Somebody would have to have a blazing first half of the year to catch up with him.

Hi Nick...Youp here another interesting record that has been established by FEd already:
With 11 titles in each of the past three campaigns, Federer became the first player in Open Era history with double-digit numbers of crowns in three consecutive years.
Not so bad... B) For a transitional number 1 roflmao
My mistake you already spotted this one...I have to search for something different
Tennisveritas - November 17, 2006 07:11 PM (GMT)
Here some other impressive achievements of FED
- First man since Mats Wilander in 1988 to win three out of the four Grand Slam singles tournaments in the same year...More he was able to do this already twice: 2004-2006...Pete never did twice this (but he did once if I am correct but over two seasons). :yikes:
-Federer is the first player to win four Tennis Masters Series titles in one season: Indeed this season he was able to win:
*Pacific
*Miami
*Toronto
*Madrid B)
-Only male tennis player to have won 8 singles Grand Slam titles in 3 years B)
-First man in the open era to make it to six consecutive Grand Slam finals: This I hope really he can improve with the AO in 2007 B)
-Federer tied Ivan Lendl's record of 10 consecutive Grand Slam semifinal appearances: This I hope really he can improve with the AO in 2007 :)
Andy1073 - November 17, 2006 09:33 PM (GMT)
Federer - First man to win the Wimbledon/US Open double three years in a row.

IMO that is about the hardest one to achieve of all his achievements.
