Title: Next Year Predictions!
yeahyamum - November 14, 2006 04:06 PM (GMT)
Now that this year is over and has been a superb one for JHH, Mauresmo and Sharapova, what does next year hold?
Who do you think will win the Slams?
How will Hingis do?
Which of the young pretenders will rise up the rankings?
Who do you think will fall down the rankings?
Are we likely to see the return of the Williams sisters/Davenport/Pierce?
The Dav - November 14, 2006 05:47 PM (GMT)
I love making new year predictions :D
Hingis will have a few good moments, but I don't see her improving much from the way she's played in the second half of 2006
Mauresmo will fall off the pace a bit, and I think it'll be Justine and Maria who'll be the dominant players of the year, Kim will have mixed results, the Russians will be their usual erratic selves, I see Kuznetsova having a good season, but Dementieva and Petrova slumping...
As for the big 3, well, I think a Williams sister will win a Slam, not one of the first two though ;) And I PRAY that Venus is fit and Serena starts to take the game seriously again...
Finally, Lindsay will win Wimbledon (in my dreams roflmao ), she'll win 3 titles (inc. Wimbledon ;) ) and will postpone retirement until 2008! roflmao

Now that this year is over and has been a superb one for JHH, Mauresmo and Sharapova, what does next year hold?
Who do you think will win the Slams? AO - JHH RG - JHH SW19 - Masha USO - Dementieva
How will Hingis do? She'll climb into the top 5
Which of the young pretenders will rise up the rankings? Peer and Azarenka
Who do you think will fall down the rankings? Davenport and Patty
Are we likely to see the return of the Williams sisters/Davenport/Pierce? the Williams sisters - probably. No to Lindsay and Mary
dl04 - November 14, 2006 09:29 PM (GMT)
Venus, always in title conention at Wimby barring injury, ability and focus isnt an issue. Serena hopefully will get fitter and start playing more tourny's. lindsay- there must be one final hurrah there
i think pierce is finished to be honest :( not ability wise, but that injury is the last straw IMO, there's only so much you can come back from at 32 :(
I think peer will break through, can see her making the RG semis for some reason, and i think players like Hantuchova and Groenfold will start making big strides again. jankovic also will figure highly.
Hingis- i cant see a Slam tbh, maybe if there is a heavily depleted field, but i only see her making bigger waves outside the slams.
SerenaW19 - November 14, 2006 10:17 PM (GMT)
Ok, I may shock some of you with my predictions roflmao
I think Serena will get back to it next year play at least 8+ tournies and have a really good year winning at least one slam and challenging at all of them and hopefully ending in the top 3 :D
Venus will I  get over her injury, she must be so hungry by now and will have zero pressure on her so will hopefully do a Wimbledon 2005 at one of the slams preferablly the FO or AO ;)
Lindsay will get back up the rankings. I really can't see her winning another slam :( She will do well at all of them hopefully and have one final slam run to the semis or final beating top players and proving she still is the best :D
Justine and Maria will start off the year as the dominators, and will probably win at least one slam between them, Justine isn't given the French every year (well ok she was this year) but she will have to work hard. If the other top players get back to it i.e. the Belgians and Williamses Maria should be relegated to slam semis for a few more years.
Kim will also be up there with them, I hope she continues to be ruthless and do well as she could well win a slam in that case :)
Amelie won't win another slam imho. She will do well in all especially Wimbledon as always and stay in the top 5 for most of the year (until Serena pushes her out ;) )
I think Hingis will make 4r/QF in all the slams and generally have a more consistent year. Hopefully she will have a good run to the semis in a slam.
I can see Dementieva and Patty dropping out of the top ten. And won't do much next year.
Vaidisova will probably stay in the top ten and Kuzzy will be there also but won't manage to really challenge the elite (when it counts at least).
The youngsters will continue to do well and move up the rankings. But they still are the youngsters. Jankovic will also figure highly at the beginning of the year but then perhaps fall off a bit again after getting into the top ten.
AO - Venus ;)
FO - Serena
Wim - Serena
USO - Kim/Justine
Gav - November 15, 2006 02:17 PM (GMT)
Hmmm, I am not as avid a follower of the women's tour as the mens....
But I'd say IF the Williams Sisters appear again then in my rather unqualified opinion:-
AO - Justine (I think the AO will come too soon for the Willams even if they are back)
FO - Justine/Serena
Wim - Serena/M. Sharapova
UO - Serena/Venus
If the Williams sisters don't come back to the tour in full force I'd say:-
AO - Justine
FO - Justine
Wim - M. Sharapova
UO - M. Sharapova/Kim
I'd like to see Martina reach a grand slam final but I can't see it. Prove me wrong Martina!!!
And I hate to say it, but Davenport to slip down the rankings this year.....I will be lynched for that I know!!!!
EDIT:- I agree with SerenaW19 that Amelie won't win another slam....
liam_valid - November 15, 2006 02:45 PM (GMT)
Who do you think will win the Slams? None of my favourites have a sniff
How will Hingis do? semis in the slams at best. I still think she was fortunate to win a tier 1 this year
Which of the young pretenders will rise up the rankings? Jankovic
Who do you think will fall down the rankings?Linds and Mary
Are we likely to see the return of the Williams sisters/Davenport/Pierce? Serena, yes. Venus, maybe, Linds, Mary, no

I was gonna say, I don't see Lindsay falling down much further
SerenaW19 - November 15, 2006 07:06 PM (GMT)
I think Lindsay may fall down a little bit at the start of next year but no further than thirty. She should pick up valuable points at Miami/Indian Wells and hopefully she'll play a bit of the clay season to gain points
After gaining slam points for RG and Wimbledon, she should be back in the top ten or near by the end of next year.
timmadigan - November 15, 2006 07:17 PM (GMT)
Wish list Predictions:
Martina learns to serve faster than a French waiter and wins the French Open and Wimbledon.
True predictions:
Martina remains a QF/SF player with a few wins a year and remains in the top 10, maybe skirting the top 5.
Justine is injured, again.
Lindsey is injured, again.
Kimi is injured, again.
Venus gets re-injured, again - decides to call it a career.
(see the trend)
Amelie retakes the #1 spot with all the injuries along with another Aussie Open title.
Serena keeps trying to "comeback" without practice and gets re-injured but vows to keep coming back.
Maria S keeps screaming (not a hard prediction to make)
The other Russian gals keep pressure on the top and take up most of the top 10.
SerenaW19 - November 15, 2006 07:20 PM (GMT)
Interesting. Apart from Maria though I actually see the Russian dominance falling off a bit.

Is her 7-8 tournie schedule omitting even RG then? :o
I think she's lying at will turn up to Amelia Island and RG just for the hell of it :D

She said she's only playing 3 Slams, you can guess which one she's skipping
She *might* play AI, cos she loves that event, but it depends on how she feels in March...

Yeh, it's definitely a possibility...I know playing Indian Wells, Miami and Amelia Island is a bit tough, but she'll have a lot of rest time afterwards

Yeah, that's what I was thinking, get some events in before the long lay-off before Wimbledon, I also wouldn't put it past her to skip Miami again and go to AI

Who do you think will win the Slams?
AO- Jankovic
FO - Hingis
W- Serena
USO - Davenport
How will Hingis do? top 3 and a FO title :D
Which of the young pretenders will rise up the rankings? Jade Curtis
Who do you think will fall down the rankings? Sharapova, Henin and Mauresmo
Are we likely to see the return of the Williams sisters/Davenport/Pierce? YES, YES, NO

How will Hingis do?

Slams -
AO - JHH/Sharapova/Mauresmo
RG - JHH/Petrova/Kuznetsova
W - Mauresmo/Sharapova/JHH (Venus & Serena if they play)
US - Kim/Sharapova (again V & S if they turn up)
Hingis will hang around where she is at the moment, she might sneak into the top 5 and/or a slam semi or two.
Jankovic will almost certainly go top 10, Safina looks to have peaked. Ivanovic & Vaidisova should continue to hang around the cusp of the top 10 sneaking into the lower reaches of the top 10 occasionally. Chakvetadze & Golovin are the dark horses.
Davenport may fall a bit at the start of the year but should get back up towards the top 10 later on. Schnyder should fall out of the top 10. Dementieva may struggle as well.
Williams who knows. Pierce I really hope can make it but it's looking unlikely.

AO-JHH/Sharapova
FO-JHH/Petrova/Kuznetsova
Wimbledon-Mauresmo/Sharapova
US Open-Clijsters/JHH/Sharapova
How will Hingis do?
I don't think she will win another slam. Perhaps a couple of tier 2/3 victories and maybe a tier 1 clay event.
Which of the young pretenders will rise up the rankings?
I think next year will be a good one for Jankovic or Chakvetadze...maybe Peer too. Can see Safina, Vaidisova, Kirilenko and Groenfeld dropping down!
Who do you think will fall down the rankings?
Schnyder, Dementieva, Petrova too (thinking about all her points she'll need to defend)
Are we likely to see the return of the Williams sisters/Davenport/Pierce?
Venus yes, but not to her best, Serena probably but then again with her you just never know. Davenport will but retirement looms and I think this injury will finish Pierce off!
