Title: A Rod

He is one from 1 so far, tommorow he has the toughest task there is in our sport that is trying to take out Federer! But we have seen in the US Open Final this year despite the head to head Andy now isnt a million miles away from being able to have his way with Federer on a given day espcailly in a best of 3 set match such as tommorow, as Andy said the more chances he gets and the moer he keeps improving chances are he will pull once back at some point.

I even as a loyal Roddick fan aknowledge this will be tough but I hope he can first of all make it tough then if that goes well go for the win :)

GOOOOOO ANDY

Federer is the Roadrunner and Roddick is Wile E. Coyote. No matter how much dynamite he brings, or whatever diabolical chicanery he can devise (think: the Acme-patented Federer Fly Trap), the old dog just can't prevent ending up flattened roadkill at the Emerald Lawn Empire.

Andy Roddick has one of the most devastating and destructive tennis games on the tour. At his best, he can serve anyone off the court (that includes Roger Federer) while any short replies are immediately blasted away for winners. His problems this year were due to a confidence crisis and a loss of understanding on how he should approach playing tennis. For a while, he was sacrificing his results for the future i.e. learning the art of serve and volley.

At present, it seems that Andy has found his place in the tennis world thanks to Jimmy Connors and he has much more variety in his game. He can serve and volley with a lot of success now and he can also play from the baseline just as effectively as before. All that is lacking right now is the mental strength to truly challenge with the best. He should have recorded a win over Federer in Shanghai as he had two match points, with one on his own serve. All he had to do was hit a trademark ace or at least hit a wide serve to knock away an easy volley, but he crumbled under the pressure instead.

There is no doubt that next year his mental weaknesses will be all but gone due to Jimmy Connors' coaching skills and he'll be in the final of at least one slam final. If he plays like he did in Shanghai at Wimbledon, then you'd have to make him favourite for the title. Wimbledon should be his tournament.

I think his net skills are pretty average (well, average for a top level pro). That's an area where Connors may really be able to help him. I think the very best volleyers have a certain instinct that maybe can't be taught, but still, I think Connors could work with him on improving his volleys.

Very true Nick, look at Mcenroe he has stroke mechanics that no coach in the world would teach, but he had amazing hands and just had a natural feel for the volley.

I think Connors will just teach Roddick to play agressive volleys as much as is humanly possible.Get up to the net and kill the ball rather than being cute.

Connors said about his own game, he wishes he'd approached the net more. He was never a great volleyer either , so he might be able to work out the right strategy for Roddick to time his approaches to the net behind big groundstrokes to finish the point more quickly.

I am in two minds about Roddick. I was very excited when he nearly beat Federer in the Masters Cup and then baffled when he couldn't bring the same intensity to his match with Nalbandian. With some help from Connors this year maybe he can make Wimbledon a little more tough for Roger. Even though I am a big Roger fan I think it would be great to see Andy take a Wimbledon title soon...Roger needs more rivals!!
