Title: Blasphemy?
Selesfan - November 4, 2006 12:29 PM (GMT)
Why are so many people blaspehimg these days? Songs on radio and t/v shows are doing it constantly. That "Panic at the Disco" song for example, is disgusting!

I agree, there is no need to swear in music, when its supposed to be a Universal language. Its to make the kids think they are cool owning a record with bad language, hence more kids buy the record and they make more money. Bring back the carpenters :)

So true! :) The fact that the two words are used in succession is particualrly disgusting, and they're repeated throghout the song. It also makes kids think that it's okay to say such things.

I have not heard this particular song SF, but ive heard rappers go on and on, thinking they are the 'big men' because of the foul language they use. To me, it just shows how UNtalented they are that they have to substitute proper ryhming lyrics with blasphemies, because they cant come up with anything else. And i agree that its the kids that are at risk here. Parents should NOT buy these records

It's called "I Write Sins Not Tragedies", and the name of the band is "Panic at the Disco". I was mortified at the lyrics, I phoned up and asked the radio station what the world was coming to when such balsphemous and swearing things were said in songs. The word God is used as blaspehmous, and the other word is a paratuclar word that sounds exactly th same as a word which means a barrier obstructing flowing water.

The wway that the word God is said bothers me, as does the word that follows.

I should probably put this in the peeves thread. But one thing that does annoy me extreemely, is people swearing in songs.
A lot of people and "musical artists" today seem to forget that music incl. songs is an art form. A higher way of expressing yourself. A unique form of articulation and pleasure.
If people can't find other ways to express themselves than swearing, then I'd much prefer they just shut up to be honest.

And Serena, I suppose you could say blasphemy and swearing are similar, in they are both bad to say, but blasphmey is taking God's, The Holy Spirit's, or jesus' name in vain.

That's a debate in itself really. Blasphemy is supposed to offend any God that you may choose to believe in whereas swearing is supposed to offend the person or object you are either referring or speaking to......I think. But I think swearing was developed originally from blaspheme.

Yes, that is blaspheming. The worst I've eveer said is "crap", I don't think that passes as blaspheming though. As for "For christ's sake", that is terrible blasphem, except of course you were saying something literally for his sake. What I found disgusting on the BBC was one time someon pretendded to be me(not for the fuirst or last time), and used that term, just to get me annoyed!

I don't think many people do. So many people blaspehm, however, and say things like that, and I don't like it. Religious or not, it'a not accectable. Still, I can't realy blame people of todays youth for doing it, as they probably think it's accectaple, seeing that t.v and radio does it, as well as their elders, who really should know better. People who thought blasphemous thoughts, let alone voiced these thoughts, were killed back in the day of jesus, and look at how many people are saying it nowadays.

No, I screamed, but did not swear or blasphem. It's because of the devil that childbirth is so painful. When he tempted eve into eating the forbidden fruit, God punished her for eating her by making childbirth more painful.

Personally, though I don't believe it's appropriate to use God's name as an exclamation, I don't really think that someone saying "Oh God!" or "Jesus Christ", without really thinking about what they're saying, is nearly as bad as someone truly using God's name in vain. Using the name in vain, IMO, implies more like using it falsely. That's the kind of thing you see Jesus fighting against in the Bible stories; chasing the "money-changers" and other rip-off artist out of the temple, criticising the Pharisees for their false piety, when most of what they did was for their own power and benefit. Or in today's times, people often twist the words of Scripture to fit their own agenda of judgement or hate, rather than understand the true message of "love your neighbor." That's more what using God's name in vain means to me.
(But I can't stand that foul-mouthed rap music, either.)

That's yourm opinion, and you have valid views, but I still don't like people saying "Oh God" in a tone of blaspheming. I stil find that very unaccectable. If someone says "Oh God" in a praising tone, that's great.

Most of the time swearing in music is pretty pointless and not needed but I don't think it can all be condemmed outright.
For instance one of my favourite Tori Amos songs has a line where she goes - it's so *bleep*ing cold & it seems the perfect thing to say at that moment. No one could accuse her of being lyrically unimaginative so I don't think it could be considered wrong in any way.
As for taking the lords name in vain - well if you don't believe in a god then it doesn't really matter. As far as i'm concerned there is no such thing as blasphemy as I don't believe you can offend an immaginary being.
If you do believe surely you've got something better to do with your time then get worked up - I very much doubt an all powerful being is spending much of his time worrying about blaspheming! It was like all the extreme Christian groups worrying about Jerry Springer The Opera over here in the UK - surely there are better things for them to worry about - like poverty perhaps?

Why are you so anti-religious? Why can't you accept that there are very religious people (me for one), who live our lives according to God and the bible, and that one of the commandments that we follow is to not take God's name in vain. If you are a non believer, fine, I can't change that, but don't go critizing people that do believe.

If you are a non believer, fine, I can't change that, but don't go critizing people that do believe.

That was a great post GS. :ok:
Selesfan, I am nto anti-religious. I used to be a church goer (Church of England) of my own accord. I was never forced to go, I wanted to go to fidn out what it was all about. I packed in going as the Church seemed to be obsessed about minor and peripheral things - for example, if we didn't go on the third Sunday of every month our parents had to write a letter explaining why and if it happened 3 times you were out. I failed ot make a Sunday cos I was sick. And another Sunday cos I was actually doing a sponsored walk in the Peak District rasing money for disadvantaged kids. The Church argued with ym mother over this and it was most disgraceful the way they carrie don. It was however Ok to miss all 3 OTHER Sundays of the month without being reprimanded. I never missed those myself but lots of people did and were nto told off. I foudn this attitude petty and showed hyspocrisy and lack of priority to me - surely a Charity walk is a good thing? I left becasue of that incident, and I was only about 9 years old but wise enough to see what was going on. I also found soem of the ideology quite false. whenever I asked questions I got stupid and unconvincing answers and tod nto to question. I also hated the fact that the leaders in our Pathfinders group (my sister was in it too) made us call them Auntie Mary and Uncle Michael when they were not our blood relatives, as did my parents. And tbh I got bored with it all as it wasnt; providing me with anything and was largely based on orthodox preachign of Bibel parables and stuff with no discussion and interpretation, or relevant application to my life.
Later on when about 21 I had a fiance whos emother was very into the Church. I go tinvolved again but I must say that the snobbery and hypocrisy completely disgusted me and I left. We had a party and there was an autistic child. His good Christian parents carried him upstairs in his wheelcahir and left him on hsi own in a bedroom whilst the adults and non disabled kids partied. It was liek they were ashamed of him. Me and my firends carrie dhim downstairs and brought him into the party. His parents went mad as did my fiances mum so I gave them all a piece of my mind and told them they were nto Chritian at all but disgusting and evil and left. His mother branded me evil and as we lived together, kept coming over saying we were sinners! :o She kept tryign to arrange weddings and stuff for us - it was a nightmare. I knwo this might sound extreme but my experience of many church members is that they do not practice what they preach and use religion as a form of gaining social standing and power. So wrong.
Now I would not say I am not religious, I am most likely agnostic but I do beleive ther eis something out there, but mayeb more forces of mature based than a God, maybe like Pagans. I am not anti-religion, although I do agree with Karl Marx that it was and still ofetn is a form of social control - the opiate of the people to quote him. I am however anti the abuse of religion and it is very much abused and misused for a fact. Holy wars, terrorism, repression of women or minorities, intolerance of other beliefs, denyign women the right to use contraception etc is all evil in my mind. I appreciate the basic principle sof Christianity though and tyr to live by them. To me they are a good moral code and you dont; need to be relgious to follow them. And as for blasphemy - well it seems to me to be all rather peripheral and the least of a religious person's worries to me. :)
I did not stop believing as such but was nver sur eif I beleived in the first place.

how many people call for divine intervention to support their arrival into the promised land during sex?
Is that blasphemous? |

Well if sex is outside of marriage I guess it might well be. :D

I dont go to church or anything, but many of my family are very religious.
My experience of church is similar to SB's. I just couldnt relate it to my everyday life. It all seemed a bit weird talking about 2000 years ago.
I do agree with the basic principle of Christianity though , and do believe in God. I just dont take the whole thing as literally as some do. Religions are far too complicated for me and why are there so many of them anyway ?
