Russiafan - October 24, 2006 09:39 PM (GMT)
With or without you has a very sad memory for me, I heard it earlier this year in a bar in China literally the day after the break up of a 6 month relationship, not very long I realise but long enough for the song to hurt....still I guess I'm masochistic cos I still picked U2 :D :whip:

Well in their early days they were ok, Boy and War were reasonable albums for their time. But really, Bono does act an ass a lot and that has ruined their reputation. I will confess that I did go to see them in one of their "stadium rock type band" tours (Zoo TV). It was quite a spectacle and not a bad show. The warm up bands were "Big Audio Dynamite II" and "Public Enemy" (a few yuppie white folks in the audience didn't seem sure how to react to that one.).

Ooooh I love Big Audio Dynamite - but not sure about II - they were a Clash spin off :D . And I like what i heard of Public Enemy = was it Fight the Power? I must admit to getting them confused with NWA (who I am hoping were Straight Outta Compton ?) Yes I guess they would put on a spectacle, and fill the stadium up. I just really wen toff them when I saw a live show on Tv a while back and Bono was ringing up the Pope and stuff and I thought hmmmmm..... I do really like that Song from Rattle and Hum (I think) The Fly - not sure why, and it isnt; that popular either.
I do think some bands woud be best off quitting early, rather than dragging on I really do. I wa sgutted when a fave band fo mine the Jam split in 1982 at the peak of their powers, but I think Paul Weller was right in hindsight and he went on to do lots of other stuff as the Style Council and of course solo. He said he did nto want to be a rock dinosaur like other bands ( i think he was digging at the Stones -sorry to their fans, no disrespect I like a lot of their stuff and I knwo Pebs loves Mick :D). I'm really unsure as to whether Queen shoudl still carry on, I mean Freddie was such a legend it seems sad to be making lesser music and singing with 5ive !!! Mind you, if Paul Rodgers from Free tours with them a sI heard, he is at least a good singer. :ok:

Yo!! Public Enemy Number 1!!
The only time that I can recall being absolutely drenched in beer was a Public Enemy concert.. roflmao Some of the boys there got a little excited.. Their album 'It takes a Million to hold us back' is a classic!! :ok: If you know any songs by Tricky then if you know 'Black Steel', well that is a cover of ao song of theirs from the album. I used to play 'Fight the Power' from the 'Fear of a Black Planet' album when DJing.. :) Their music is sooo much better than the posturing gangsta dirge that rap has become. And NWA, yes indeedy.. F*** tha Police, Straight outta Compton, etc, etc.. One of my faves is 'Express Yourself' which is quite tame by comparison.. I love the opening line 'I'm expressing to my full capabilities.. now I'm living in correctional facilities' brilliant!!
Hmm.. not a U2 fan either, and can take ot leave them.. I also have not so nice memories of 'With or Without You' but different to those of Russiafan (although I did break up with someone at around that time). I recall U2 being really popular in "Cov".. and there were only 2 safe places for the indiekids of the town to go to.. get caught in the wrong place at the wrong time and there would invariably be some guys with that Charlie haircut (Chris Waddle circa 1987) and U2 T Shirts wanting to kick us around... So I associate it with being in a town centre at night, looking to ensure that I got onto the late bus back in one piece! :yikes:
Oh, and the Specials song was about "Cov", of course..

Oh yes Express Yourself! I love that one. I agree, that kind of music means something is has a great edge, unlike that stupid Gangsta Rap crap that si just glamourising guns, drugs and abuse of women. I do like rap music, but nto fo that gangsta variety. There are soem great songs sung in that format, like old Gil Scott Heron's The Revolution Will Not Be Televised and of course Beck's Loser :D Cyrpess Hill, House of Pain, etc.
Interesting what you say about the U2 bloke sin T-Shirts. I never exerpinced that but I think they did become more your Saturday night at terribel night clubs type band. Do you knwo what I mean when you went to a club years back and they said they woud play alternetive music, but you always got th emor ecommercial stuf and a load fo drunken yobs dancing to it ina pack arms round each other liek footie hooligans, jumping up and down with beer in their hands ? They always used to play Simple Minds and that woudl happen so it put me off them. I also went off U2 more when I was having a fling at Uni with this Irish man! As he started to get on my nerves, so did they! roflmao Every time I went roudn there he played the same album (Unforgettable Fire I think) and went on and on abotu them, even though I said I wasn't keen on them. Not exactly the way to seduce a woman by playing music that drives them up the wall is it? roflmao
SuperBRAT - October 26, 2006 11:35 AM (GMT)
OMG so close! Wish I picked the Specials, I thought they would not be that popular though, given they were big when I was just 14 :D Soryr to whoever put U2 in, but come on the Specials! Top Band
