Gasquet Looks For First Win Over Clement in SFs

Fourth-seeded Frenchman Richard Gasquet (pictured) knocked out 2004 champion and No. 5 seed Robin Soderling of Sweden 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 in one hour and 52 minutes for a place in the Lyon semifinals on Friday.

Gasquet will next meet French compatriot Arnaud Clement, who beat Pat Rafter for the title in 2000.

Clement overcame No. 8 Nicolas Almagro of Spain 6-3, 6-2 in 64 minutes. Clement won 31 of 34 points on first serve with ten aces. The Frenchman, who has captured two ATP titles this year in Marseille (d. Ancic) and Washington (d. Murray), broke the Almagro serve three times from four opportunities.

Clement will look to make it three wins out of three in 2006 against Gasquet, the winner of two ATP titles in Nottingham (d. Bjorkman) and Gstaad (d. Lopez) this year.

In the bottom half of the draw, seventh seed and 2004 finalist Xavier Malisse beat American Robby Ginepri 6-4, 6-3 in 79 minutes. Malisse, who has reached two ATP finals this year in Adelaide (l. to Serra) and Delray Beach (l. to Haas), now holds a 31-22 match record.

The Belgian will meet 30-year-old Marc Gicquel, who edged past sixth-seeded French compatriot Sebastien Grosjean 7-5, 1-6, 7-6(5) in two hours and nine minutes. Gicquel, who lost in the Lyon quarterfinals to Gael Monfils last year, is currently enjoying his best season on the ATP circuit with a 16-10 match record.

I dont think anyone has mentioned the tournament in St. Petersburg but we have Ancic and T. Johannson in the final. The biggest suprise was the semi finalists. I doubt anybody here would have heard of them?
And nice to see Johannson in a final once again.

Good point.. The StP open seems to have been largely ignored.

Apparently Ancic's semi final opponent has been mentioned as a star for the future..

Yes, congratulations to Thomas Johansson on making the final. It is his first final this year. I think that he's the holder of the tournament too?

He has a formidable opponent in Mario Ancic though.

I'd like to see Johansson win, but I like both players. It should hopefully be a good match. :ok:
