Title: New Seven Wonders of the World

Stonehenge makes list in new seven wonders vote

Tue Oct 17, 8:34 AM ET

LONDON (Reuters) - Only one of the ancient wonders of the world still survives -- now history lovers are being invited to choose a new list of seven.

Among 21 locations shortlisted for the worldwide vote is Stonehenge, the only British landmark selected.

The 5,000-year-old stones on Salisbury Plain, Wiltshire, will be up against sites including the Acropolis in Athens; the Statue of Liberty in New York; and the last remaining original wonder, the Pyramids of Giza in Cairo.

An original list of nearly 200 sites nominated by the public was narrowed to 21 by the organizers and experts, including the former director general of Unesco Professor Federico Mayor.

The vote is organized by a non-profit Swiss foundation called New7Wonders which specializes in the preservation, restoration and promotion of monuments, and the results will be announced on July 7, 2007, in Lisbon.

About 20 million votes have already been lodged, including many from India, for the Taj Mahal; China, for the Great Wall and from Peru for Machu Picchu, the fortress city of the Incas.

The other original seven wonders of the ancient world were the Hanging Gardens of Babylon; the Statue of Zeus at Olympia; the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus; the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus; the Colossus of Rhodes and the Lighthouse of Alexandria.

Tia Viering, spokeswoman for New7Wonders, said: "Apart from the Pyramids, the seven ancient wonders of the world no longer exist."

The only criteria for the new list is that the landmarks were built or discovered before 2000.

"People of England, it is now your turn to be heard," added Viering. "Support Stonehenge to become one of the New Seven Wonders of the World."

Votes can be made online, at http://www.new7wonders.com/index.php

roflmao at the Statue of Liberty being on the list!

SerenaW19 - October 23, 2006 04:53 PM (GMT)
The statue of Liberty

I hope the pyramids are going to stay on the list...otherwise it's just stupid.

Anyway the new seven wonder will no way be as good as the old bunch :D

welshboy91 - October 23, 2006 04:54 PM (GMT)
Statue of Liberty?

Only in America...

Scotsguy - October 23, 2006 04:55 PM (GMT)
Those are ridiculous....I voted for the Colloseum, but most are fairly newish...

Yep, there will only be one '7 wonders of the world' list for me :D

Also, the Eiffel Tower and the Sydney Opera House? They're great, but they're not exactly 'wonders'

welshboy91 - October 23, 2006 04:56 PM (GMT)
I'd vote for the statues on Easter Island

Yep to be honest good as these places are they are not awe inspiring in the way the pyramids are.

They're just not old enough for a start!

The Sydney Opera House :yikes: Ye right how is that a 'wonder'? And the Statue of Liberty isn't even that big!

LDF - October 23, 2006 05:00 PM (GMT)
My list would be:

The Acropolis
The Great Wall of China
The Pyramids
The Taj Mahal
Machu Picchu
The Colosseum
Statues of Easter Island

:)

Certainly not the Statue of Liberty, the Eiffel Tower or the Sydney Opera House

The Dav - October 23, 2006 05:00 PM (GMT)
I totally agree with making a new list, what's the point in having 7 wonders of the world, when 6 of them don't even exist!

Anyway, I voted in that poll actually, and picked the Statue of Liberty as one of my choices :D Unlike most of the other monuments, that one actually has a meaning and a message behind it and is probably the most famous monument in the world, so I think it qualifies :D

LDF - October 23, 2006 05:01 PM (GMT)
How many of these have you guys been to?

welshboy91 - October 23, 2006 05:03 PM (GMT)
I've been to 3 of them

That's a good list LDF but to be fair they are just replacements for the ones that have gone. How fickle are we that we have to replace the seven wonders just because they're gone

It seems a little stupid to me it's like saying ok well now Winston Churchill is dead we need a new Greatest ever Briton. Just because they're not there anymore I don't see why we need a new list

But the old one is completely redundant, 6 don't exist, and yes they were all great, and they will always be part of the 7 'ancient' wonders of the world list, but to most people they don't mean anything, I didn't even know half of them when I looked that list up

The hanging gardens of Babylon were the cradle of civilisation Dav..most of the nations on the earth exist BECAUSE of the impact Babylon had on the ancient world. They were also very beautiful and a feat of engineering millenia ahead of its time. Not many things can say that!

So you don't think that the great wall of China is eligible for such a list? The fact is, there are many awesome landmarks around the globe that deserve to be called 'wonders', and this list allows that to happen, I'm sorry, but 6 of those 7 landmarks are not 'wonders of the world', because they don't exist here on earth, they are the 7 ancient wonders of the world, and the pyramids will most certainly make this new list, so it will continue to be a wonder of the world :)

Lucky! I wish I had family in intertesting places like that! Must be fun to go for a month. One of my aims at some point is just go and live somewhere different like in New York for a year; it must be such as experience! Hopefully if it coincides with my academical or professional life at some point.

Im aiming to do the trek before I leave uni so hopefully I'll find some people who want to do it and I can!

No, what makes a monument a 'wonder' is totally subjective, it can, like you say, be how old it is, it can be that it is an example of incredible engineering, or it can be, like the Statue of Liberty, something that encompasses certain virtues like peace, unity and opportunity...

There is no single way to define a wonder, it can be a variety of things :)

We're not talking about people, we're talking about monuments and landmarks, and they weren't that 'wonderful' if 6 of them went by the wayside

Anyway, what sort impact did they have? Unlike say a Winston Churchill? Not much

Well yes there are other great wonders of the ancient world still in existence like the pyramdis and the Great Wall; and I would be interested to know how the original list was compiled and when. Even though it is of course harmless either way whatever happens and it isn't going to hurt anyone having two lists or not.

But the fact is they are THE Seven Wonders of the World and it seems pointless to me to come up with a new seven. With Ancient wonders like this it seems a foolish prerequisite that they need to be in current existence to be classified as wonders. With things like this, the fact they existed at all is amazing, and the like of them will never be replicated as long the earth continues so I would've though having a permanent list of them would've been a good way of preserving them
