Title: Irony: Fed is the iron man.

It really is very amusing to see that, although there've been many discussions about the player's schedules, only Davydenko has played more matches than Fed (87 - 82). Fed of course has by far played the most best-of-five matches (GS + masters series finals).
I'll admit however that around ten years ago guys like Kafelnikov played over a 100 matches a year, so the intensity of play and the the physical strain it causes has probably increased. These days you really need to be focused from the 1st round.

Fed has played a hell of a lot this year, but he has got the end of tournaments so much. It is unusual to play this much surely even in the mens? I don't know these kind of stats in the mens but even the top women rarely play more than 70/80 matches a year, even Martina Navratilova never played more than 100 matches in a season. It would be interesting to see if Fed can manage to do that...

thats not so surprising really. 4 slams which he has reached the finals of. All the masters series so far except for Hambur which he has also reached the finals of except for cincy and a few other optionals which he has won or finished runner up. Hes only gone out ONCE before the finals this year which is amazing!

With Davydenko gone, Federer still has the chance this year to beat Davydenko as the player who played in most matches this year!!!!
That will be an incredible feat for Federer!

I wonder what the greatest number of wins by a player in a season might be (in the open era)? Surely he must not be too far from it. Maybe he's 4 off his own personal record, or something like that.

check this out:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Association_o...TP_Tour_recordsVilas in 1977: 131-15 (16 titles)
Lendl in 1982: 106-19 (15 titles)
The women's records are harder to find. Margaret Court's 104-6 in 1970 does stand out however with 21 tournament victories, although percentagewise Navratilova's 86-1 in 1983 is pretty amazing as well.
