Title: Actica Admits it!
Description: see the BBC board

SerenaW19 - October 16, 2006 12:04 PM (GMT)
Actica has now actually admitted to being HingisReturns on the BBC Board.

And as she rightly states we have been here before haven't we?

Well done those of you who held out hope in her but you have fallen for the same old Hiro trick :(

Well done those of you like LDF and Pebs and Nick that had your suspicions and acted on them :ok:

Now Actica has actually admitted this I hope we can get back to the wonderful tennis we are sure to have in Zurich and Madrid and this will be a close to the whole matter that has engulfed the board this weekend.

Thanks :)

Blimey ......... I'm getting soft in my old age roflmao

Hiro has to be schizophrenic surely? No one can keep that act up for so long can they? Or am I just "naive"?

Andy,

I know u got burnt this time, but i was really impressed by your faith in Actica. It shows that you must be a good friend to have that much belief in someone despite all the evidence. And although it didn't quite pay off this time, some day you'll find that having faith in your friends is an amazing attribute!

As Tim would say - Take the positives!!! :)

Thanks DinkyJo :) I do feel like an absolute idiot right now with what happened and the fact in my mind I was certain that actica was just that and nothing else, I would just like to say I'm really sorry to everyone who I said were wrong and that it wasn't HingisR and SWF :( I just didnt want to believe it if anything, because actica was always dead sweet to me and I felt sure that no way would a bloke be able to do that... and then it turns out that it was :o  I dont think I'll ever live it down to be honest, I have just made a fool out of myself and to think I was doing   to a man! :yikes:

ObL!v!0N - October 16, 2006 03:25 PM (GMT)
Don't worry Andy, it's only a message board. I'm sure we'll all forget the whole Actica episode sooner, rather than later. ;)

Nick Havoc - October 16, 2006 03:26 PM (GMT)
Don't worry about it TMA. I don't think anyone here will really hold it against you. The worst you'll get is maybe the occasionally teasing comment.

Don't feel bad Andy - I'd read a few posts from Actica on here, and i would never have linked Actica with Hiro (remembering hiro from the Beeb days). Mind you, i never managed to guess all of Selesfan's aliases either - so maybe i'm just rubbish!!! B)

And i don't think anyone will tease you really (well, at least not for a while) simply 'cos so many people were taken in!

Hey SB :)

Yep, it sounds like a whole bunch of trouble too.. :( I'm reluctant to say this, but I have no interest in the new board, and the old five live board is now just junk. There are a handful of decent posters, but it's really a sinking ship, as it winds down.. I don't quite understand why they just haven't pulled the plug now and be done with it really..

Well, I'd always maintained that the beeb board has never really been run by people who actually care about the boards, or...

the beeb has so many boards to run that they just can't do it properly.. they have all sorts to look after, not just all of the sports.. there's politics, the arts, to name just a couple.

True. When i first joined I was also interested in the news boards, until I posted a few times and soon realised that they were full of bigots and opinionated, arrogant and ignorant idiots who were just using it as a platform to say things that they should not really be saying. I'm all for freedom of speech, but the number of intolerant people (as in intolerant of race, homosexuality, other religions, disabled/mentally ill people and women) was an absolute disgrace and a shock also. If that lot are representative of British peopel and their views, then I worry for us all I realyl do. :( The best and most friendly chat I had on there was about godo fish and chip shops, and I waqs given the details of one in London that does mushy peas and excellent thick gravy like 'oop North"! roflmao

SB - it's so nice to have someone else say that. I used to post on the news boards, but i got bored of having arguments about Muslims - EVERY SINGLE DAY! Honestly, they never discussed anything else.

Which is kind of the way the tennis board has gone (not about muslims, about federer). I have to say this though, just 'cos it's been winding me up, but these trolls on the BBC boards are getting more and more outrageous every day and saying everything they can to annoy people, but make it sooo obvious that they're trolls, and yet people still argue with them. You'd think some folks actually enjoyed the fight, the amount of time they spend arguing with these people who are obviously doing it BECAUSE they enjoy winding others up. I've read a lot of stuff on those boards, but i so rarely reply because it only encourages them.

I do realise it's sometimes fun to poke trolls (I've seen our overlord do it enough times) but i wish people didn't take them so seriously!!

Thank you

That is a worry re: the news boards.. :(

Often the very people who cite their right to 'freedom of speech' are often the ones who are abusing it. Absolute freedom of speech should not be allowed. I once saw an eminent human rights lawyer give a brilliantly incisive critique of why there shouldn't be absolute freedom of speech.. citing reasons such as a duty to protect vulnerable groups such as the ones that you mentioned, as well as national security issues. I wish that I had a transcript of this as it was in a freedom of speech debate. He patiently waited until everyone had said their piece and then pretty much ended the debate with his speech, and brilliantly so.. everyone was floored!

Ooh a board discussion on mushy peas and chips?! Where do I sign up??

Hey Jo :)

Yes Muslims was the main focus of racial and cultrual intolerance on there. That really got on my nerves. Every Muslim was evil and should be deproted or shot according to that lot. I live in a multi cultural area and the main ethnic population is Asian so there are plenty of Muslims. I've worked with plenty too. And Sikhs and Hindus. They are just average people, and a lot of them are not even that strict in the religious sense. I eat in a Muslim restaurant every week. They invite me for a free meal every year, and are very generous people. They dont; support extremism or terrorism, in fact naughtily the lady who runs the place cooks pork sausages with her Xmas day turkey which I must say made me giggle, cos I will not eat pork and I'm not muslim and not that religious really. :D

I used to be a disabled persons' advocate and I acted for a client who was 70 and a devout Muslim, he wrote lines form the Koran and worshipped when I was round there. He was the most repectful and thankful client I ever had. Poor guy lived alone and had no support, and was so disabled he could not leave his house. He suffered racial harrassment too  i There's good and bad in every religion, and practically every religion has some kind of bad track record somewhere in history for atrocites to others liek the Catholics and the Christians. Some of these people really should get out more and meet people from other cultures. They must live in all white towns or something and have very prejudiced parents to turn out like that, if nto then they really have no excuse whatsoever for their disgraceful attitudes.

Anyway my rant over :D

roflmao Yeah the mushy peas was the most informative debate on there!

I agree with you abotu freedom of speech. There are just some things that are not helpful or constructive when said and can in fact have a derogatory effect, such as inciting racist violence. It's the olde liberal dillemma isn't it - subject fo many a politics essay - wich is more important? Freedom to OR freedom from? And John Stuart Mill I think came up with the 'no harm' principle - do and say as you like as long as you do not harm anyone else. Freedom is a great thing, but with it comes responsibility, as in when you excercise it respect others and don't impinge on their rights. It does make me sick when I think of the number of people decent whose freedom was taken away and human rights violated in concentration camps. And then i see those who are free behavign liek they do and being racist etc. and it just makes me sick. It may sound harsh and it will hit hard, but they should send everyon like that to visit Dachau and see what it was like for the Jews in there. I've been and nothing could have prepared me for it I tell you. The film is harrowing and you leave the place in a stone cold cloud of silence. Sorry but t takes that to shut some of these idiotic bigots up.

SB, you hit the nail on the head by saying that with freedom comes responsibility :ok: Having a platform to vent your opinions is such a privilege when you compare this to other countries, whether in the present day or in years go by.

I also agree with your thoughts about how people have been treated in the past re: human rights abuses (as well as in the present day). It is truly harrowing to visit these places, let alone read about them, or learn about them in documentaries, for example. Unfortunately the way that international news is structured, there needs to be something extreme in that country for it to be reported, whether a natural disaster or war, a military coup, etc. If a country isn't overtly falling apart at the seams in some shape of form, then it suffering quietly in misery is not newsworthy, and the media has moved on to the next crisis..

I just wish that there were a greater awareness of what so many people go through or have gone through, and consequently a greater appreciation of the freedom that people have. And from that, there ought to be a greater respect for the privileges that it brings and less of a tendency to abuse it.

rant over.. :)

Totally agree Petalp!

I feel that education is party to blame, I mean how much priroity does history have on the curriculum these days? Not enough clearly. And in the past there were a lot of students who were ignorant of the most basic historic facts, like who Hitler was! :o I guess also the parents dont; teach their kids these basic things either. Thats' partly down to a more greedy and demanding culture, who expect everything, many of whom are selfish and without morals either. When I was a kid, if I complained about my food I used to get told to thank myself lucky i had a meal and was referred to the famines in Africa. It's also down to the fact that it's a long time since this country was involved in a world war in the way we were in WW1 and WW2, so the generations involved aren't around to educate us and when they do they often get mocked. I'm a pacifist but I always pay my respects to those who died in the wars. The kids in a local village use the War Memorial as a place to drink and do drugs and play loud music on the steps of. They've even graffittied and vandalised it. Says it all really. :(

Well this thread was opened for someone to exercise their freedom of speech.. and then it gets hijacked by a discussion about Freedom of Speech and morality in contemporary western culture.. the Supreme Overlord will be horrified!! roflmao

Re: your thoughts.. defeintely agree with your persepctive on education. Why the frell do children get taought about the Romans, at the expense of the far more relevant 20th and 21st century history? I've nothing against ancient history, but surely the starting point should be now and then work backwards??

Agreed, there is a serious issue with respect for history and certainly the wars.. I was walking past my old university at teh weekend and found that it now has an institute of the 2 world wars. I found this interesting as it not only seems to merit an entire department, but also implies that there were 2 world wars, and another is unlikely to happen.. or maybe i'm looking too much into it.

And yes, people are well off in a way that was unthinkable a few decades ago.. and yet there is scant appreication of this, and a real lack of respect of what has gone on before. You know, I really think that 20th century history is such a rich source of information. There is so much fascinating things to learn and studying it really gives you a sense of place in context of the global village..

Apparently my Nana had some of my cousins over at her house recently, and she let them stay up way later than their parents would allow them normally whilst she told them stories about her and my grandad during the 2nd world war, and they were absolutely rivetted.. and my Nana loved it too.. I wish I'd been there!! :D

Oh I'm glad that your gran told them all that stuff. :ok: Yes it sounds terrible but in a way the old adage 'you dont; knwo you're born ' is still true, in fact more so.

The 20th century is indeed a rich source of useful references and that's mor eof less what i did. my knowledge of ancient history is crap really. Best to start form the most recent and work backwards I agree. I was lucky I had the chance to do 20th C and the wars at school, as that was uncommon then and it was mainly Kings and Queens, which is relevant but have to say that I think the wars have mor erelevance and stuff to learn from than looking Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain in 14 whatever.

So where is the man who wanted to excercise his freedom of speech then? I think the cat of responsibility must have gotten his little tongue. :D
