Title: Favourite surface
Brakkus - October 16, 2006 06:41 AM (GMT)
I just wondered what surface players on the board are playing on.
Within my reach in terms of travel,are;
Grass,hard,carpet,and tarmac.
Years ago there was clay in my home town, but I can't even think of where claycourts exist in my county.
Anyway faster courts do suit my style of hitting, although I have improved my consistency,I still have the urge to go for broke when the first opportunity arises. Now I have learned to wait a bit when the odds of being more agressive are stacked more in my favour.
What surface do you favour? Are you an all rounder? Is there only one surface for you to play on?

I've only played on hard courts (indoors and outdoors), so I can't really say.
I'd imagine grass would suit my game, but I'd have to actually play on it to see
I will have the opportunity to play on clay next year though :D

Clay sounds like fun! :D There used to be clay courts near my parent's house, but I was only there occasionally and usually at Christmas when it was too cold to play on them..
I play on an astroturf court, which is about to be re-laid (at last!). It's quick and skiddy (not overly bouncy), but also takes spin well.. the ball bites well on the surface, so you can have a lot of fun with heavy slice and top spin.
It suits my game well, which is more instinctive rather than the considered rallyer on Clay. I would love to play on grass courts though. I just think that there is something wonderful about them.. There are grass courts not too far from me, but the club looks terribly snooty, and I'm probably too downmarket for that exlcusive little club!
Have played on hardcourt too. They were very new courts, and found them to be very bouncy.. Quite unforgiving in that respect if you're not on your game..

I nteresting thing about grass which you all here want to have a go on.Fortunately the grass courts for me are only 10miles away.
They have to grow the grass quite long, because with so many wanting to play on them, and a large member base,if they were short they wouldn't last more than a few weeks.I would say they were no faster than a hardcourt, but the bounce is lower as you would expect.I had tremendous fun putting side spin and slice on backhands.Of course volleys are always accepted well by the grass.
Just down the road from me,there is a private school with it's own courts. The grass is so short,by the end of the summer they look like Wimbledon, all worn.I bet they are quick.
So for me playing on grass is like a special meal.Doesn't happen to often.

I have played most on hard courts, when i played at school it was this awful tarmac-y stuff that the ball bounced so high off. Thankfully I have long since left that behind...
I have played on clay a lot this summer and really like having to work the rally and think tactically though after a few hours I'm pretty much dead....
At uni we have astro-turf which is my first grass like experience, it wasn't fun at first, way too fast, but I'm getting used to it and with my serve improving I think I might grow to like it :)

Indoor carpet's my favourite, as those are the courts at the tennis academy I go to each year, really well kept and fun. :)
Though best is probably hard courts, and that's the main surface around here, along with astro...don't like grass, it's a little too quick for my style of play. :(

Yeah, it is Martinas, Lleytons and Monicas, but is it Serenas, Jennifers and Lindsays?

Its not Serena's best surface, but she adapts to it so well, as does Lindsay.
I think it is Jen's more suited surface :)

Yeah, I was thinking the same. After all, it has been Jennifers best Slam.

Lucky old me gets to play on astro-turf!
When it gets wet what a nightmare?
Because i am short and it skides so much its hard to get a clear swing because it just shoots through!
Only played on indoor hard twice because they cost a bomb!
No clay or grass courts in sunny old Belfast because they would e destryed by the rain! :(
