Description: Jeopardy for authors united.
Three - March 14, 2006 03:38 AM (GMT)
Yes, this probably should be in contests, but I will post here. This is how it works. I will post a question, you may use anything but me to get the answer. The first to answer gets the points. The winner will recieve---- *looks around house and in pocket* --- unlimited applause. hehehe   . SO, here it goes.
First:
How long IS a 'jiffy'? (yes, there really is a measurement) ;)
Bonus: What does the riddle in my signature mean? Hint: it is one word, maybe like a compound. :)
This is worth one hundred points, the bonus is worth two hundred. SO, there is 300 points possible. Hit me with your best shot. :P
The Thought Fox - March 16, 2006 10:02 AM (GMT)
*waves Awod* And so it shall be moved to contests
Unfortunately I don't know how long a jiffy is. I think it's longer than a moment, but shorter than a while.
aleana15 - March 17, 2006 10:55 AM (GMT)
hmm well I've had a brief look on google and can so far only find the dictionary deffintion but that dosen't give an actually measure of time.
The Oxford Dictionary says that a jiffy is:
"A very short space of time: only in such phrases as in a jiffy, in a trice."
I'll have to contiue my search later when I have a bit of time to waste :P
Three - March 18, 2006 06:34 PM (GMT)
Ooh, *looks suspiciously in both directions* Here is my hint:
1)I love google
2)I love amusing facts
see what you can do with that.

aleana15 - March 20, 2006 05:37 PM (GMT)
I have numbers!!!
okay, according to the lovely people at wikipedia (I love that site) there are 3 different units of time that are described as a jiffy:
In electronics: a jiffy is the time between alternating current power cycles (1/60 or 1/50 of a second)
In physics:is the time taken for light to travel one centimetre in a vacuum, which is approximately 33.3564 picoseconds.
In computing: a jiffy is the duration of one tick of the system timer interrupt. It is not an absolute time interval unit, since its duration depends on the clock interrupt frequency of the particular hardware platform.
Typically, this time is 0.01 seconds; on early microcomputer systems and on many game consoles (which use televisions as a display device), it is common to synchronize the system clock with the vertical frequency of the local television standard (either 59.94 Hz with NTSC systems, or 50.0 Hz with most PAL systems). Within the Linux 2.6 operating system kernel, on the Intel i386 platform, a jiffy is 1 ms, or 1/1000th of a second.
And if you can understand all of that then you are better then I am (which isn't all that difficult really... ) :D

I was looking for the .01, or one one-hundredth, so Aleana gets the "points". Yay!
So:
Aleana = 100.
Can anyone answer the bonus? -Hint: if you can keep up with the conversations you might discover the answer.
Three - March 22, 2006 02:13 AM (GMT)
Next Question :
 In which year was the planet 'Pluto' discovered? (200 'points')?
Bonus: Who discovered it (pluto)? (300) -_-
Bonus: What is the answer to the riddle on my signature? (one compound word.)(200) B)
Congratulations to Aleana for answering the last question! :) :D
The Thought Fox - March 23, 2006 12:04 PM (GMT)
While people had been searching for a ninth planet, and had found evidence of it, for centuries, Pluto was properly discovered on February 18, 1930.
It was discovered by Clyde Tombaugh at the Lowell Observatory, Arizona, named after Percival Lowell who was the closest to discovering pluto before that, and the PL in Pluto stands for Percival Lowell.
(Thanks Wikipedia!!)

Okay, I am in the mood for creativity... Here are your 'questions.'
1) (continuing from previous post) What is the meaning of life? (be creative, awe me and I shall be generous.)
2) Write me a paragraph (or so) on your thoughts about writing. (make it good, and thoughtful... there are many possiblilities.)
3) Give me a creative quote on the subject of knowledge (it may be by someone else).
There you are... :D
Ms.BACPACLady - May 12, 2006 12:57 AM (GMT)
1) As Lugana stated earlier, the meaning of life is Three, but allow me to explain why. You see, a triangle has three sides which is an uneven number. In a perfect world, there would be an even amount of everything but this isn't a perfect world, DIVERSITY B'DAMNITT!!! Also, recent studies have shown that people tend to get along BETTER in groups of three than anything else, ( no, Im not talking about threesomes). My THIRD and final argument, (I hope you caught that, I just said THIRD), I know a young lady by The name of Amanda (aka Three), and I believe there Is no better way to discover the meaning of life than to learn about her...(and notice, she calls herself THREE).
2) I believe that writing is something different for everyone. For me it's a hobby, and more importanly It gives me a sense of belonging, (if that makes sense). Alot of my friends write, (and very well I must add), and I have been doing some sort of writing for as long as I can remember. I don't always know why I write except for that it comes naturally. To me writting is fun, plain and simple!
3) "An education isn't how much you have comitted to memory or even how much you know. It's being able to differentiate between what you know and what you don't"
