The Doorway into another world By Andrew Hollaway Joe was sitting in his room, tired of life. Everything that happened to him seemed to go wrong. He’d been fired from his job, dumped by his girlfriend and his cat had gotten run over. He made a wish; he wished he could leave all his problems behind and go off to a wonderful world. A world where people overcame their problems. A world where people could spend time with one another without shouting. A world that allowed people to have a little fun. If only there was such a world. Joe walked to his front door and opened it. He walked through the doorway, and was in another world. It was a rush of colour, it was rainbow, and it was beautiful. He walked into this land of colour, and took a deep breath. He decided he would go for a walk. While he was walking, Joe found a bench in a beautiful park. He sat down and looked around. He looked at people having a picnic on the hill; they were laughing. He saw little kids climbing to the top of the highest hill they could find, and then rolling down screaming with glee. He saw people running around flying kites, even though there was no wind. Joe kept walking. Joe walked into the heart of the city. There were cars rushing past, people bustling by and horns being blown. He saw people being crushed by the crowd, engulfed without a hope, but then he saw them walk out of the crowd with not a scratch. He saw people inside cafes having coffee with friends, catching up. He saw little kids drinking cups of hot chocolate, with a look of pure joy on their faces. He saw people laughing, after what had been a hard day. Joe kept walking. He walked and he came to a beach, where he sat on the sand. He saw people playing in the water, jumping to avoid the waves. He saw two lovers walking along the beach, holding each-others hands. He saw a family eating fish and chips on the sand, watching the waves crash down. He saw little kids building huge sandcastles and bugging their parents to come and look at them. Joe kept walking. Joe walked and walked, until he came to a lake. He saw a fisherman on a boat, in the middle of the water, casting off, ready to catch the one that keeps getting away. He saw kids racing their speedboats on the water, and imagining that they were out on the ocean. He saw people rushing by on their jet skis, making jumps and dragging water skiers behind them. Joe kept walking. Joe walked until his legs wanted to give way, and then he kept walking. He walked past a church and saw a wedding take place. He saw the Bride standing outside the church, with a beaming smile on her face. She threw the bouquet; a girl caught it and looked over at her boyfriend. He saw the groom standing next to his bride saying hi to all his distant relatives. He saw the bride’s mother crying tears of happiness and her father joining in. Joe kept walking. Joe was walking and he came across a highschool. He saw boys playing footy on the oval and girls sitting on the edge. He saw one of the girls’ go over and score a goal; there was a look of astonishment on the boys’ faces. He saw a girl sitting down on the grass with her beau’s arms around her. He saw students just hanging around waiting for the final bell to ring and their freedom to be announced. Joe kept walking. Joe decided it was time to walk home. He walked back past the school, and saw the waves of students fleeing when the bell went. He walked back past the church, and saw the wedding car drive off and people opening bottles of champagne. He walked back past the lake, and saw the fisherman shout with joy at his catch. He walked back past the beach and saw a kid jump all over his magnificent castle and start to rebuild it again. He walked back into the city and saw the cafes closing for the day. He walked back past the park and saw the kids covered in grass stains from rolling down the hill too much. He walked back up to his front steps and sat down. Joe sat on those front steps and he watched the sun go down. He looked back on his day and chuckled to himself. With that he unlocked the door and looked back, saying goodbye to his wonderful world. Joe walked through the doorway into his world, and sighed. He went inside, turned on the light and flopped on his couch. He had found a wonderful world; all he had to do was look around him. There was a world where people could overcome their problems. There was a world where people could spend time with one another without shouting. There was a world where you could chill out and have a little fun. There was such a world, and he lived in it. |
