The Grey Elf
Prologue
Once, long ago there were three orders to the Elven nation and under a younger day with dark horrors no longer thought of in human consciousness they protected the world with beings of light such as themselves. The world was young and clear cut then, light and dark, good and evil, Elf and Dwarf verses Troll and Demon to name but a few. It was simple and then came the Grey race, the humans.
These new beings, these infants, were neither light nor dark, their destiny was unfound and unclear and the Elves and Dwarves distrusted them, for they were not known, they were as alien then to this world as an Elf would be now. They grew these hasty folk, with their short lives, like candles in the blowing wind and reproduced faster than any race before it outnumbering the Elder races, both good and bad and each race sought to either protect or use this malleable and very dangerous tool.
Of the Elves The Order, the warrior clan was accepted most readily, because these were simple times with simple, yet far reaching, choices. The head of this Elvish clan Kalian was the first to mate with a human, allowing some of the goodness that is inherent in human nature to be born and to infect and convert others of the race as well as making the first Half-Elf. Longer lived than their mortal parent but not immortal like an Elf they were an enigma because they possessed in part both the inherent magical abilities and foresight of immortals but also the insatiable curiosity of the human.
A Demon, just one, was able to take advantage of the Human race, Ashrak the Distorter managed to bite one before he was killed and from his line was the most well know darkness born. From that one corruption were vampires born and the world itself began to change.
The single continent began to move apart and as is the inevitability of human nature, wars began again. In this time humans were small in the nature of things still, their were times when Gods walked the land still, their blessed or unholy feet (depending on which one) still sometimes walked the land, their lungs filling with mortal air and knowing the pains of the world as well as the pains of the people in it.
The Elves and other immortals were forced into a war of man, which one and why was unclear and is still unclear because so many records have been lost or rendered indecipherable. What is known is that all the races, evil and good joined this fight in their own way and all began to die in their thousands, even the Elves who tasted death so rarely.
At the end, as with so many wars little was resolved, The Order were almost completely wiped out as was the race of man, the High Elves, those that served as both priests and mages were almost destroyed as well. The only number that was left were The Balance who by their very definition believed in the balance of nature and were pacifists all, they ruled by number and declared then that though they could not kill their enemy, it was as much human kind as it was Demon and that it was time to be separate themselves and all magical creatures to keep the world in some semblance of balance.
So they made the Concordat, the pact they brought everything magical, from plant Elf, Dwarf and Tree to demon and vampire through to a chosen Island and magically closed off the borders, this began the first decade of the Concordat.
As a rule Elves measured years in decades being Immortal and after several hundred years the world shifted again and the Island was part of another land mass and the world moved on. It was in 34562 ATC that The Order suggested that they find out if any in the race of man still carried Elven blood and this was agreed too by the council of Elves (still in Balance control) knew that some dark beings could pierce their barrier by force and the select of the Order were renamed, The Protectors they were called, never seen or heard, abstaining from love, family, life and children in pursuit of simply keeping man away from demonic influence and looking for any traces of their long lost kin. They would go out singly or in pairs, no more than that, and fight the demons before anyone could be harmed and remove their bodies. Some of that clans line (those descended from Kalians first Elvish wife) developed True Sight, an ability to see through all magic (which greatly helped in finding most demons as they hid their presence behind spells continually, few like the vampire could ever pass for human).
Occasionally an Elf will make a mistake that causes the council great displeasure or will willingly act outside their influence; this is the story of such a one, a Grey Elf.
This is the story of my son. My son that did everything different and still made his father happy, even on the last day I saw him.
This is the story of Silverwolf, Adept Protector and direct descendant of Kalian, master of True Sight and Grey Elf outcast and accursed.

I'm not a huge fantasy reader. Well, that's putting it wrongly; it's more accurate to say I'm a picky fantasy. But, for what it's worth, you have me fairly interested. The only thing I would say is that it feels like you're relying on the prologue. It's a little long, and has a lot of information to swallow.
