Title: Contest #6
Description: Coming soon to a bookshop near you...

The Thought Fox - January 31, 2005 09:10 AM (GMT)
This was originally going to be a Write Idol challenge, but there aren't enough participants or judges. So here is February's contest - and yes, i'm aware it's still january...just!

Your Book Trailer

We all have a thousand an one stories or novels that only we know, or that we haven't finished but we know the end. For example, everytime I RP with my Jolku character, I constantly refer to a novel that only I and DD know (i.e. the one we're writing. So your task is:

Write a trailer for your book. I'll give an example once I've escaped this lecture, so don't worry about starting yet. Basically, where a film trailer would show clips of a film, you're going to write snippets of your books. If you want a narrator, use italics.

TIPS, RULES AND OTHER STUFF:

1. No word limit this time, but bear in mind you're writing a trailer not a film.

2. No style limit either, do it any way you wish, e.g. script, prose, etc. Make it clear though.

3. Entries will be remarked on INTRIGUE, TRAILER STYLE, and QUALITY OF WRITING.

4. ONE ENTRY PER MEMBER

5. (This one's for you Gemz) Only post entries in this forum. Any discussion is to be done in the "contest 6 discussion thread" that i just set up, so it might help if your start your post with who's entry you've just read. Any discussion posts in here will be deleted, not moved. Don't make me hit you with the Awod™!

Legal, technical and general hoo-hah:
- The judges decision (i.e. mine) is final. You don't like it? Go find Clairc!
- I shall accept no bribes, death threats or violent beatings from those of you who know me.
- The rules will be obeyed or there shall be Repurcussions (muahaha, etc.)

ENTRIES TO BE IN BY: 1st March

Voila! Un Example!
***********************************************************

Coming to a Bookshop near you, this side of never…

Fog

The dancing light of the torch became a flickering blur as the mist set in.

Shadow

He stepped out into the hallway, the wall-mounted torch burning behind him, casting a treacherous shadow along the room

Darkness

The pain became to much for him, his eyelids felt heavy, he felt himself leaning forward and was engulfed in the dark abyss of unconsciousness.

Those are their allies

He brought the hilt of his sword down upon his foe’s head…
…bringing his sword down sharply on the guard’s head…
……delivering a blow to the woman’s head…

A thief divided by his loyalties,

“Jolku, we need you now more than ever,” Sek urged.
“So does the Realm,” he sighed.

An emissary with a hidden agenda,

“Thou hast put the entire Realm in danger!” the commander bellowed at her, “And all for the sake of thine own pride!”

And an officer working against his colleagues

“Thou have betrayed the very ideals thou sayest guided thee,” his superior sneered.

Must stop an army too terrible to imagine

“We’re not fighting any ordinary army, boy,” the drunken soldier slurred, fear glaring from his eyes, “We’re fighting ourselves…”

There was no army approaching them. Instead, there was a wide undulating sea of armour, blurred with motion, rippling towards them.

From the writer of the awful ‘Ben Hawkes’,

He raised his blade and swung it towards the soldier, who masterfully blocked it with his own sword.

and the equally awful and thankfully unfinished White Nite series

Druart’s eyes glowed with divine menace as his fist of flame burned a deeper blue.
“Dost thou see, thief?”

Comes a fantasy epic unlike any you’ve ever read

“We are passing through events that will shape our realm,” Druart said, “Whether we succeed or not.”

The Thieves’ Guild: Mystic Secret

(spoken quickly) Rated PG for ‘pathetic garbage’. The author does not accept any responsibility for the amount of time you waste reading this book. Book contents subject to change but, hey, That’s life, baby!

stressederica33 - January 31, 2005 09:00 PM (GMT)
hmmm... does it actually have to be book you've written or can it be an 'imaginary'book? (as i've never actually written a book story....) or do you mean from a book you've read?

The Thought Fox - February 1, 2005 09:02 AM (GMT)

In forgotten lands and during forgotten times, Priests struggle for purity and Wizards struggle for power. The peasants bleed in the fields, their food stained with blood and then taken by cruel lords with cold eyes.

But that's all about to change.

A wizard has made a mistake, he has allied Demon and human flesh to make one of the most powerful constructs ever seen and no one can bar his path. This tyrannical Wizard has more power than any other of his combined, more than them all combined, and they shudder in their towers and run from him.

The Wizard is dead.

His construct killed him, the only thing that could and would, because he made a mistake in his rush to power. The now dead wizard allowed a human soul to enter in the making and the construct runs from the deaths that it has commited, even it's masters. Soon it is found by Priests of the forest God, and it took a name Syn'x and was identified as male.

But what is Syn'x?

haunted by his demon half, a trained priest abstaining from love and family in the pursuit of healing the greater whole exactly what is he? Priests are pascifists and yet he is haunted by dreams of silver armour, and of battles and the world at war. He is at the fore front of all a sword in his hand, killing with love, but what is he?

Follow Syn'x through his life and his fight of his demon halves, meet the seven and their lord knight, meet the threat that comes without warning, meet the end of anything he knows.

Meet Syn'x Woodchild.

[{Writing in clear but interesting font on dark screen, with voiceover) Many children are born in the Slaves Quarters of the Mages Tower]

*shot of baby, big blue eyes looking up at camera, which is taking viewpoint of midwife*

[But this one…]

*midwife’s finger traced five pointed star (with single point upwards, therefore not satanic pentagram) on baby’s forehead*

*overlaid shot of Star’s sword – with good pentagram star on it, fades into screen, baby fades out*

[…is a little special]

*new shot, this time of Star grown up (for those who don’t know, she has ash blonde hair and bright green eyes), grabbing Xendar’s hand really very hard, just as she jumps into a pool*

SPLASH

< (Voiceover) she has a quest.>

*Star reaching out for her sword, laid out on an altar to The Power, w/The Power’s voice, echoing, ‘Take it, The sword is for you, made especially for your coming here, for your coming to this world. Take it’ Her hand closes on the grip, a white light flares around the pommel stone*

<And so does he>

*shot of Xendar (yes, here you go, hair colour black, eyes colour rich blue, as opposed to pale blue) having a bundle of paper thrown at him by his father. He looks at the front page. It says: ‘The Avenger’ in a flowing, handwritten script*

<To kill the Avenger>

*shot of Xendar taking Dan the Idiot by the collar and pushing him up against the wall.
‘You saw the Avenger?...What did he look like?’
Dan: ‘he had a kind of…robe.”*

*new shot, of Star magically ‘putting on’ her Chosen One’s outfit, the air glows around her, forming a white robe*

Dan: ‘He wore a mask’

*the mask forms over her face, and she draws her sword. Shot fades*

<But nothing can ever go completely to plan>

*shot of Xendar and Star fighting, both robed and masked*

*shot of Xendar hiding behind tree, staring down his nose at Sasha. Star appears: ‘Sasha? What’s wrong?’*

<And things often get complicated>

*Xendar, looking down at river: ‘As if anyone would forgive me for anything I did.’
Star: “I would.”
He looks at her.*

<Very complicated>

*new shot of Star yelling at Xendar. ‘I hate you! How could you lie to me?’ She storms out of a door, slamming it. As she does so, the shot stops abruptly.*

<And surely can only end in tears>

*Star of Star crying, looking down at Xendar who is lying in a pool of his own blood*

<A story of friendship>

*shot of Star running down the road, dragging Xendar behind her, laughing*

<Love>

*shot of Star and Xendar standing in a moonlit clearing, getting just ever so slowing closer together*

<Lies and secrets>

*shot of Xendar walking next to star and Nicko (who is a mage with brown hair, greeny eyes and a big grin most of the time) with a thoughtover (like a voiceover, only voicing thoughts :P) Oh, if only you knew what I’ve done, who I’ve murderered…*

<And an ultimate evil>

*shot of a black robed figure, complete with hood, from the back. ‘So, ‘Avenger’, you have come at last. I was getting bored waiting’.*
*Shot of Star in her Chosen One/Avenger’s outfit from just behind the ‘evil’s’ shoulder. She draws her sword, light shines along its length.*

*Black screen. Date of when it comes out etc*

*one last shot Of Star and Xendar surfacing from he pool she pulled him into right at the beginning of this ad. Sasha (tigress with magical armour down her back and over her forehead) pads up to regard them.
<How pathetic, > she says, <I’m going to have to join in. >
SPLASH*

Hehe, the end :P

Phew, just made the dealine.

Okay, here goes...

In a calm and beautiful forest, somewhere in England....

...a magical world of magic exists beyond our eyes.

Plants opened their flowers and stretch their leaves, birds called morning greetings....
Cashel stood up and stretched her wings, shimmered in the morning light, their sky-blue colour dancing like water.

A world of peace and tranquillity...

...minutes later the pair were sitting at a small round table in a square room doing what fairies love doing best, talking and drinking.

But even fairy lives can change

Cashel looked down at her bare feet and sighed,“I need your help.”

She held on tight to her brother and whispered, “What if I fail?”
“You won’t fail.”

“The story,” Errigal said heavily, “that you told just now; it wasn’t about Ailou Fairtree was it?”

“Ailou’s gone missing and I’m going to find her.”

“I’ll get you back in time, Cashel. I promise.”
“I know,” Cashel lied.

When friends are in danger...

Tears started to trickle down her cheek...I’m going to die in this place. I know I am.

. “Simply,” she said with an unmistakable glint in her shinning eyes, “I want your magic. All of it.”

...the risks don't matter.

Errigal knew all to well the dangers of the human settlement, from cats and foxes, to cars creating deadly tidal waves as they drive down the wet streets.

Pain shot through her body, causing her to crash to the floor...Her last hopes for survival disappeared as she crashed on the floor.

Because firends are the true story of life.

This thought created the tiniest hint of a smile on her pale face. If she were to die, she would die in a way that would make Errigal proud.
