good lord, what is with all the manga? don't people like anything else anymore? cartoons are all manga these days, most comics have gone that way as well (except of course the magnificent David Loyd, and Frank Miller even though his style could use a bit of a change) I mean honestly!
DragonLady4 - September 14, 2006 09:25 PM (GMT)
manga is the current popular cartoon right now. I just started reading the Sandman books though and ACK! I ran out to read lots of Neil gaiman :D
non comic-wise, I love Henry Fuseli, William Blake, Gris Grimly...off the top of my head.
captain_IPA - September 14, 2006 10:12 PM (GMT)
William blake is something else, I agree. If we go farther back, I must say that I love Matisse and Van Gogh (theres just something about impressionism, isn't there?) and more contemporary, I like Doonesbury's style (the comic strip) but still, Anime? look what happens when you drop a couple of nukes on a country: you get people with overlarge eyes and tentacle rape cartoons. I'd have to say the only decent things ever done in manga were the Akira books, the movie that followed, and Ninja Scroll. Oh, and Transformers, although I'm not sure if that started in America or not, the new comics are bad ass and are resemblant of manga
DragonLady4 - September 15, 2006 09:48 AM (GMT)
oioi, you missed out Saiyuki, snappiest dialogue I've seen in a manga, beautifully detailed art and a storyline that makes me keep buying the books. Love it! And they have small eyes, and no tentacles :P haha
american toons, even disney, are all jumping on the anime bandwagon, simply to make money. Thank god for spongebob squarepants, eh? :D
I had to research Kandinsky and Picasso for essays, and their progression was pretty facinating to learn about, including Kandinsky's much debated synaesthesia.
Spirited Away and Howls Moving Castle are also awesome, but I wouldn't really class it with the rest of mainstream anime stuff, since the directors films all have a pretty distincive style. Yeah, the characters tend to be simply animated, the the backgrounds? ACK, beautiful!
Oh, and Sky blue, a Korean film, is fantastically animated too.
captain_IPA - September 15, 2006 07:56 PM (GMT)
damn, I forgot about Galaxy Express 999, one of the few with a real story that made sense (although it was basically just Soylent Green with more violence and robots) I simply feel that Anime is more popular and gets more acclaim than it actually deserves, and its in vogue with animation companies because its so cheap (You mean we only need FIVE frames per minute? wow, fire the animators boys, prepare to rake in the dough!) I mean, it's not as though we're ever going to see animation of the quality of Sleeping Beauty (one of the most expensive cartoons ever made) because those gorgeous watercolor backgrounds are too pricey, same with Snow White.
and yes, if you see Van Goghs really early stuff, its amazing, especially his charcoals of peasants. the lines are simply gorgeous and give you a whole character and personality without much in the way of detail. Christ, it looks as though this board has gotten more use in the past day or two than it has in quite some time. oh well, art is something that I enjoy discussing.

I love manga more than anime, because (in the books I like) you can tell that a lot of work has gone into it, and the artists are talented, with a good knowledge of anatomy etc. I watched the first episode of the Saiyuki anime, and it disappointed me, probably because the artwork in the books would be hard to animate in that detail cheaply.

Wait…there is a difference between manga and anime? I must say this comes a quite a shock. Here I grouped all of it into “big eyes, large mouth, triangular head, poor storylines, and disturbing pornography.” This must be similar to the difference between dance, techno, trance, etc.
Anyway, back to the focus; check out some of my friend’s artwork.
