Title: Wood Elves

strange behaviour - July 15, 2007 09:21 PM (GMT)
So mainlorn and HWT bullied me into finally playing a game with my Wood Elves against mainlorn's High Elves....and I have to say, I wasn't as impressed as I thought I'd be.

To be fair a lot of it in the beginning was my dice. It can be a bit demoralising when none of your archers hit anything for two turns. The only damage I did was when using Tree Singing on the scouts that mainlorn had oh so cunningly hidden in a forest - thinking my mage needed line of sight.

I swapped dice and used HWT's instead, and from that point things started to pick up. Mostly. One of my units of dryads got into combat and proceeded to eat their way through mainlorn's archers. My Wardancers on the other hand got hit and ran away. They're very pretty but shit once you actually get into combat. They don't seem to be much good for anything other than flank charges. I think in the future I'd rather have more archers.

It ended up with me wiping mainlorn's force from the map, but it was almost entirely down to the dryads. Although there was one amusing moment when my archers charged the eagles and beat them up - I was bored by this time and had reverted to my trusty Dark Elf tactic of "everyone's expendable!"

I think that 1000 points doesn't really give a fair overview of the army, but we couldn't help that as we have a very small table! I'd like to give them another try sometime in a 2000 point battle. But my initial opimion is that they're style over substance: a very pretty army that's a pain to glue together and a bugger to paint, that may not actually do what it says on the tin.

FYI: My Army.

Eternal Gaurd Lord, with amber pendant (hits first) + WS 5+

BSB with Annoyance of netlings.

2 Level 2 Spellweavers (mainly for Mag defence)

18 Eternal gaurd (BSB + Lord in here) with Standard, Muso, and Champ

10 Archers

10 Archers

5 Scouts

5 Glade Riders (1 SW with horsie in here)

8 Wardancers

8 Wardancers

10 Dryads

1 Great Eagle

Treeman

2 Treekin

I found that the Dancers usually get there points back (only one exception, where they where run down by Goblin spider riders!!!). Especially if you pop them on the flanks of the Eternal Gaurd. If not using EG, then use them in combo with the Dyrads or Treekin. On the charge they are decent, their biggest drawback being they can not flee a charge.

I always found that Waywatchers did not get their points back, so I dropped them for scouts, who do a simelar job and are a lot cheaper.

I find the best tactics are basically the refused flank, or the archers on the flank, and then sneak up your close combat troops through any woods or other scenary. Especially good is sticking your scouts in a building!

And don't forget the joys of the big eagle dropping over the heads of your enemy!

I won't be fielding eagles - I hate the models!

It's all learning at the moment, so I'll probably be trying everything once. But I will only bother with Wardancers in support from no on, [lus I like dryads!

Whats not to like about wood elven daemonettes? ;)

Red Dragon - July 17, 2007 09:41 PM (GMT)
Funny you should say that.

I used deamonettes as my Dryads!!!

I just find the Dancers sooooo cool on the charge. Never in the front. mainly from the rear. They need all the bonus Res they can get, even with 16+ S4 attacks in the 1st round.

LOL!

ATM im loved up with my night goblin spearmen! these guys keep winning combats! even when they shouldnt! its probably the little victory dance i do for them.

In the process of starting my own WE army, with 4 units of 8 and a unit of 9 Dryads, but it's all non GW. I'm using these models and going with a Halloween theme.
