Title: Warhammer 40,000
Description: Another Manfred rant

Manfred - December 14, 2006 04:00 PM (GMT)
Right. Not sure where I’m going with this; if it is going to be a blog-kind of thing or just an ordinary Manfred rant. The thing is that I have made a little inventory of my old Space Orks and going through all this old 40k stuff made me a little interested in giving this 40k thing another go. Said and done, I borrowed the new, 4th edition, 40,000 rule book and begun to flip through the pages.

The inventory was also something of a surprise too since I would never have guessed that I had THAT much 40k stuff.

Here’s what I have, ready for combat:

Warboss (Old ‘Ead-Basher!)
3 Nobs
Stormboy Nob
3 Lobbas
3 Killa Kanz
Dreadnought
6 Boyz armed with rokkitz
3 Shoota Boyz
Ammo Runt
12 Stikk Bommaz/Tankbustas
Big Mek
16 Stormboyz
8 Burna Boyz
56 Slugga Boyz
10 Warbikes
2 Gun Trukks
2 Trukks
Looted Leman Russ
Looted Griffon

And enough bits to build about 20 or so slugga/shoota Boyz if needed.

Haven’t played any 40k for years but I’m posting this from Patrise’s place and we are about to play a couple of test games. Right now it feels like I need to ask about a hundred stupid questions about the game system but perhaps a couple of questions will answer themselves after we start to play.

Might as well tell you what I am about to field against Patrise’s Templars. We will start with a 400 point Patrol fight just to try things out.

17 Slugga Boyz
-3 Big Shootas

9 Trukk Boyz
-Burna
-Nob with Power Claw

Killa Kan with Big shoota

I will let you know how it goes…

The Love Duck - December 14, 2006 08:09 PM (GMT)
Well i can tell you for a fact that burners and killer cans rock. burners are totally obscene against marines.

good luck.

I've got some Imp Guard apparently.....

Horny bought them, and I don't even know what there is! :D

No, they're just obscene!

Good luck with the game, Manfred. I recently played my first game in a while, as well. Lost, again.

They’re good, being power weapons in close combat. But the simple choppa is a kick ass piece of war gear too. And you’re right about the killer kanz, they REALLY kick ass and for 45 points they’re a bargain. So far I would say that equipping them with big shootas seems to be the way to go.

Good luck with the game, Manfred. I recently played my first game in a while, as well. Lost, again.

Thanks, man. What army do you play?

Anyway, as I mentioned we started of with a Patrol game with 400 point armies. Patrise fielded three units of templar marines, one of which had jump packs. I managed to slam my big unit of slugga boyz into one of his units to my right and flank it with my truck boys. My killer kan manage to hold out against his templars with jump packs (Jumping Jews of Jerusalem?). When the killer kan was finally destroyed only one marine remained in that unit. Meanwhile my boyz had overrun his third unit of marines. Game ends in turn four, with a total massacre.

So the first game ends with a nice massacre for me and everything apparently worked in my small ork army. Slugga boyz are just as tough as I remembered them and the killer kan is sweet. The truck boyz are quick and agile and even though having a nob with power claw with them it feels like a little overkill.

For our next game I decided to move the nob to the slugga boyz instead. This time this is wat I used:

14 slugga boyz
-3 big shootas
-Nob with big shoota

10 trukk boyz
-burna
-trukk with big shoota and red paint job

2 killer kanz, both with big shootas

After the firs game I was a little unsure of the big shoota’s potential (damn those marine armour saves) so I decided to take more of them and make a more ‘shooty’ army. As you can see this 400 point army fielded a total of seven big shootas!

This time Patrise fielded his Eldar (Ulthwe):

10 guardians
-bright lance weapon platform

10 guardians
-star cannon weapon platform

6 striking scorpions
-exarch

3 rangers

If the choppa was the weapon of choice in the first game, the weapon of choice in this one was the big shoota. On a pretty open battlefield Patrise set up both his units of guardians next to each other in a gunline and I set up most of my stuff right in front of him with only my truck boyz on my other flank. And then shooting began. I went first and with six big sootas firing at the same unit the unit suffered seven casualties. My truck boyz seeped of to the left catching the rangers hiding in a forest – a little too close to be out of harms way. Shoot and chopped to death they didn’t stand a chance (they died HARD and I almost felt a bit guilty piling up all that dice...). Patrise’s first turn and seeing the truck boyz closing in (and seeing what they just did to his rangers) he didn’t want them to get any closer so he fires the star cannon at them – hitting twice but only manages to kill one of the boyz (one shoot was saved by the trees of the forest!). The bright lance put a hole in one of my killer kanz immobilised it and stunned the crew. In my next turn my truck boyz jumps back up in the truckk and take cover behind the forest and let the big shootas on my right soften things up a little more. This time five big shootas leave only one survivor in the guardian unit and he promptly disassemble the weapon platform and decides to leg it. In Patrise’s turn his striking scorpions advance against the truck boyz on my left, keeping behind a small hill so that they are safe from the big shootas. His star cannon then failed to score any kills on my main unit of slugga boyz and when they shoot back his last unit of guardians is crippled. Morale check failes and they takes of. Truckk boyz race around the forest and assault the striking scorpions – and choppes them to pieces (losing only one of their own). Game ends in a massacre for the orks in turn four. I only lost two truck boyz.

Fact: big shootas kick ass against the Eldar and perhaps I went a little too far by fielding seven of them… sorry, Pattsy :(

A valuable lesson for the both of us none the less and that was the point with these 400 point games in the first place. Now, after two humiliating losses against my orks Patrise wanted revenge and this time he wanted to field some heavy stuff. Time for a 2250 point game!

Not sure if the pictures of Patrises tempar army is still available here on AP but he posted them here a while ago. Anyway with 2250 points, Patrise could field a large portion of his army which mean (from memory): landraider, vindicator, whirlwind, three APCs (with marines inside), two dreadnaughts, two squads with jump packs and a couple of squads with marines armed with heavy weapon. A very impressing and intimidating army, that is for sure.

The funny thing is that that is exactly what Patrise said about my army too. Here’s my 2250 point Evil Sunz army, and yes ‘Ead-Basher is back!!!

I will be back with more later :ph43r:

Well, I played Tau that game. I lost for two real reasons: the deployment of my enemy spread me far to thin, and I don't like using battlesuits very much (with the exeption of stealth suits). I simply field large hordes of troops (in this particular fight, I had 36 fire warriors, and 40 kroot!), and it would have worked, but some IG morters decimated my kroot before they could get halfway across the battlefield.

The Love Duck - December 15, 2006 08:59 PM (GMT)
You moved kroot?

i thought that it was best just to infiltrate em and use their guns to decimate then counter attack.

Griss VigaSkald - December 15, 2006 10:00 PM (GMT)
That was the problem. It was a 3'x6' board, and we deployed on the long sides. Not to mention that there weren't any forests. The strategy was to move the kroot forward, rapid fire on the Marines and Imperial Guard, then, when they got too close, charge to buy time for the fire warriors. However, that didn't work, because the IG morters were far more effective than normal, and my kroot died off to quickly to do anything effective. One squad was whiped out before it could even cause one casualty.

Manfred - December 19, 2006 10:27 AM (GMT)
Well, I’m off to Patrise now to finish the 2250 point game that we started last week. I had planned to give you my army list but my Army Builder has been acting up so that will have to wait :dunno:

Wish me luck! :dakka:

Griss VigaSkald - December 19, 2006 04:16 PM (GMT)
'Tis wished!

The Love Duck - December 19, 2006 06:24 PM (GMT)
aye good luck.

Manfred - December 23, 2006 01:14 PM (GMT)
Time for an update. The game, mentioned above, was a recon mission and without going into too much detail let me just say that… I kicked Patrise’s ass! Patrise had some bad luck with his dice and (for once I didn’t) but the outcome was pretty much clear after the second turn or so. With better dice Patrise could have made the game closer but hey, that’s how it goes sometimes. End result was space orks 2618 VP:s and black templar marines 1092.5 VP:s and an Crushing victory for the orks :dakka:

Since then Patrise has made some changes to his Ulthwé list and has bought a couple of nasty units (walkers, weapon platforms to name a few). We will see after Christmas if Patrise will get his revenge so stay tuned.

I was thinking about tooling my orks for a shootout – going OTT with big shootas but I’m not sure yet. Playing with a more balanced list is always more enjoyable.

One question that came up in our game was this: Patrise’s landraider shoot at my truck boyz truck and blew it up. And the boyz landed on their feet beside it. The question is can the landraider continue to shoot at the truck boyz with its remaining weapons?

I know I still owe you the list from the last game (I know you are eager to see it) but I will have to get back to you on that.

This 40k stuff has been a lot of fun thus far and let it be known that the age of the choppa is here! :choppa:

Next game will be against Patrise’s Eldar and he will bring a lot of shooty troops. So, what is a poor Ork commander supposed to do? Bring a lot of troops for him to shoot at! Lots and lots of boyz and perhaps a unit of grotz too – like a green tsunami!

And a couple of fast units on the flank (I would never go to war without my Trukk Boyz) :dakka:

Griss VigaSkald - December 30, 2006 04:05 AM (GMT)
Sounds good. Enjoy all of the T3 meat on the front lines!

Manfred - January 4, 2007 01:38 PM (GMT)
After three turns we had to take a break. Game will resume on Saturday.

Unfortunately things are not looking too good for me at the moment. It is mostly my fault though but it must be mentioned that Patrise dice rolling has improved (and mine has not).

Some things that may cost me the game:

- Weird deployment made me mess things up right from the beginning. It is a cleanse mission were you deploy in opposite table quarters.

- Bad target priorities. Wasting big shoota-fire against targets that only get hurt on sixes.

- Poor use of my power klaw nobs. Why I make them chase infantry is a mystery to me now.

- Impatience in general. My desire to get my Warboss into action too early made him get shot to pieces in round two…

Only to name a few things :dunno:

There you have it. I have not lost the yet though and things may yet turn around. Just in case I have put together a very nasty army so I will be able to take a quick revenge. A very nasty army indeed

Griss VigaSkald - January 5, 2007 10:17 PM (GMT)
Good luck turning it around.

And, if you can't, I hope your nastier army is more effective!

Patrise Sangramore - January 6, 2007 11:29 AM (GMT)
Bwahahaha! Not an ork left standing.. Though Manfred came back with a win in the take and hold mission we played afterwards.

(Btw... Not a post since 2005 and now I'm back.. New record for lurking?)

//Pat

Griss VigaSkald - January 7, 2007 09:14 PM (GMT)
Record awarded!

And congradulations to both of you for your respective victories!

QUOTE (Patrise Sangramore @ Jan 6 2007, 01:29 PM)
Bwahahaha! Not an ork left standing..

Bad dice. It's all because of bad dice.

And perhaps poor target priority...

and bad deployment...

and poor general tactics...

and poor use of my PK nobs...

oh, dear :(

But I did bounce back though!

Manfred - January 7, 2007 10:31 PM (GMT)
I just put a 1500 point Space Ork army together containing no less than 282 models!

Totally useless but still… pretty damn cool :dakka:

Griss VigaSkald - January 8, 2007 01:02 AM (GMT)
Man, that makes my army look small...

Manfred - January 9, 2007 02:41 PM (GMT)
Well, that force isn’t really a proper army even though it is legal.

Right now I’m thinking about what colour scheme I will use for my ladz; quite tricky since I haven’t decided what clan to go with yet.

Decisions, decisions, decisions…

Griss VigaSkald - January 9, 2007 08:56 PM (GMT)
You could always start your own!

Manfred - January 9, 2007 09:14 PM (GMT)
I know that but I think I will stick with an official clan.

Looks like it is going to be the Death Skullz – not only because I think their love of looting is very Orkish but also because their colour of choice is blue! :D

Griss VigaSkald - January 10, 2007 02:22 AM (GMT)
Always a good choice!

Manfred - January 10, 2007 03:51 PM (GMT)
Right. Death Skullz it is! So, now it is time to dig my old paints and brushes out of the closet. I’m sorry to say that they have been collecting dust for about two years now.

I wonder if they are all dried up or if I can still use them.

Come to think about it; I’m not even sure that I have ever owned any blue paints. What a disgrace! :(

Manfred - January 10, 2007 04:45 PM (GMT)
I did have a blue – Ultra marine blue. Kind of anyway since it has sadly passed its prime. Is there a way to breathe new life into these paints? I would appreciate any ideas.

A couple of GW paints can still be used but all of my other paints are still as good as new – damn those GW paints!

It would be kind of cool if I had a digital camera so that I could post my progress here but I don’t. I do, however, have a mobile phone with a camera so I will try to use that one instead. Be warned though those mobile phones usually take crap pictures. I don’t think my mobile phone have a macro setting either.

I will have a go at it later and perhaps I will post a picture; don’t count on it though.

Manfred - January 10, 2007 05:19 PM (GMT)
I know that the picture is awful but being a tech-barbarian I don’t know if there is a way to take better pictures with my mobile phone :dunno:

user posted image

This lad was painted for what was initially an Evil Sunz/KoS army, hence the red colour. The basic paint scheme is very easy (but not very good, I know) consisting of a Camo green base coat followed by a wash of green ink and finally a quick highlight with Camo green again.

All I have to do now is to paint the ladz blue instead of red. But first I need to get some new paints; Cammo green, and a bunch of blue colours to name but a few…

Griss VigaSkald - January 11, 2007 08:46 PM (GMT)
No, with a cell phone there really isn't, unless you live in Japan. Tokyo's cell phone tech is about 4 years ahead of the rest of us. But that's beside the point.

Looks pretty good, from what I can see. Good luck with the painting.

Manfred - January 11, 2007 11:48 PM (GMT)
Went out and bought two new blue paints (the good suff not that GW crap) and there’s a chance I can save the old Ultra Marine blue after all.

However I have started to consider another clan, the Blood Axes instead.

Decisions, decisions, decisions…

Manfred - January 13, 2007 10:15 PM (GMT)
No, damn all that indecisiveness I’m sticking with Death Skullz! And it’s not only because they’re blue – I kind of think looting is very orkish and propa’ ork behaviour.

So what I need now is to build up something that resembles a core army – and get it painted. Not that easy though since I’m still at the stage where almost everything is new and I’m still testing everything. For my next game (Monday?) I will try to field a force that is more Death Skull than before with three units of Loota boyz and a looted Griffon! I know what you think: “Why a Griffon when you can take a Basilisk?” The answer is that I have a Griffonmodel already and I’m curious about its effectiveness. The Basilisk is nasty but the minimum 36’’ is a drawback. The Griffon is also pretty damn cost efficient – it’s only 75 points.

I have a couple of other nasty surprises in my Death Skull force too but since I know that Patrise is lurking I will post more on the list later.

Manfred - January 13, 2007 10:20 PM (GMT)
I’m starting to get fed up with my crappy terrain pieces so I have started to make new one. I have just started and so far I have only managed to start with my woods; four woods of different sizes should do it I think. I have found that I actually have quite a lot of material for building Warhammer terrain so I could, in theory at least, build pretty much what I want and I’m thinking about building a couple of rock piles too and perhaps a hill or two.

The future will tell how things will turn out…

Red Dragon - January 17, 2007 01:39 PM (GMT)
I saved a lot of my old GW paint with a drop of water, and a damn good mix around.

I hope that helps......

Patrise Sangramore - January 17, 2007 10:03 PM (GMT)
About this weekend Manfred... I've been talking to Uncle Bob, Jack and another friend, Ritchie, about playing some 40k games. Thinking of borrowing or buying BHs old Necrons and IGs.

I'm in the mood to try the "Carnage" mission.. You know the one where several players play at once.. Has anyone tried it? Was it playable or just a mess of rules discussions?

//Pat

Griss VigaSkald - January 17, 2007 10:05 PM (GMT)
Well, anything with more than two players more than doubles the time needed, though it's allways fun to play with all your friends. It's all playable, though.

Manfred - January 18, 2007 10:20 AM (GMT)
That’s the scenario where four players having a go at each other, right? Lots of opportunity for my ladz to use their choppas. I’m in!

B.H. will be asking a whole lot more for his 40k stuff than you are willing to offer, I’m afraid. It’s not like he needs the cash…

Red Dragon - January 18, 2007 12:05 PM (GMT)
Be careful, you can be arrested for that Blue Guy!

(In English, Choppa is a euphomism for a penis!)

Manfred - January 18, 2007 04:33 PM (GMT)
Did not know that.

That would, however, explain why condoms sometimes fails…:choppa:

Red Dragon - January 19, 2007 03:29 AM (GMT)
To be honest, most things are a euphomism for penis in England.....
