Title: Road Tolls, E-tags etc

ABCDiamond - October 26, 2005 12:17 AM (GMT)
A number of roads and bridges in Australia are now Toll roads, and various organisations are setting up an automatic payment facility, so that drivers do not need to stop to pay the toll.

These can be named:
'E-way'
‘Express Tag’
'e TAG’
‘E toll’
'beep Tag' and maybe others.

The system will normally allow certain lanes to bypass the toll booths, and be charged electronically, using the tag that you have in the car. Cars that have no tag, would be photographed, and fines sent out.

This one has 3 E-Tolls, one on the left, and 2 on the right, with 2 auto lanes, where you can throw your coins into the basket (and yes, it does count it and check it, before letting you go) and 4 lanes where change is available.

I'd never counted the number of lanes before (9), never get chance whilst dodging the cars to pick the right lane :D

Some e-toll lanes allow speeds up to 60 km/hr, whilst others only allow 30km/hr.

These "tags" can be used on various roads, eg:

Where can E-way tags be used?
E-way tags can be used on the M4 Western Motorway, the M5 South West Motorway, the M1 Eastern Distributor, the M2 Hills Motorway, the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Tunnel, Queensland’s Logan and Gateway Motorways and Melbourne's CityLink.

I am not sure if there will ever be full reciprocal usage, but it is beginning to happen.
eg: a NSW M4 E-Way user can also use the following:

NSW Roads and Traffic Authority’s ‘E Toll’ tag
Tollaust’s ‘Express Tag’
Roam Tolling Pty Limited’s ‘e TAG’
Queensland Motorways’ ‘E toll’ tag
CityLink Melbourne Limited's 'e-TAG'
CrossCity Motorway Pty Ltd's 'beep Tag'
