hehe - first of all, pour yourself a beer - a nice, cold, frosty one :P Then, start making a list... :P  Why not fly from Glasgow ? Saves the trouble of having to go through Heathrow. Might never see or hear from you again, especially if you go through Terminal 5

tiredwithtwins - June 17, 2008 10:22 PM (GMT)
I like your list

rjs - June 18, 2008 04:08 AM (GMT)

What's your idea of a 'good' area, Coco? Do you want to be in the hills, by the sea, etc? How close to schools and shops? How big a house and land? Etc., etc., etc. If you make a list (yes, have another beer!) of roughly what you'd like, then I'd suggest you contact (perhaps by PM?) Marco and/or Pommygirl who are both in Adelaide. They may be able to help? :dunno:

The other thing, of course, is to look up the types of housing in the area on www.realestate.com.au. Most have photos, both outside and indoors, which will usually give you and idea of the types of neighbourhoods they are in.

Good luck with the list making! Oh, and I'm trying to do up a fairly comprehensive list of things to do before you (not 'you' as such but 'one'!) move. ;)

Pommygirl - June 19, 2008 07:24 AM (GMT)
The reason you may be having trouble with finding a school is because it is spelt Gilles Plains.

Lynnj - June 19, 2008 07:59 AM (GMT)
The other reason you may be having problems with schools is because you aren't currently resident in the catchment area. I don't know about in SA but here in WA you cannot be refused a place is you have proof of residency within the school zone.

TBH i often find that many new migrants put too much emphasis on "finding a good school" and use it as an excuse to chose an area to settle, my advice would be to find an area that feels right and take it from there, nothings worse than not being comfortable in an area which you've chosen for school reasons and ending up moving then either moving kids again or having to taxi them back and fore to school, a pain for the kids and the adults. Other things I'd say about chosing areas to live, if you are going to rent then rent in an area you can afford to buy then you wont be faced with moving schools again or being a taxi driver, make sure you rent the nicest house you can afford, you don't wan to spend your first 6 months dreading coming home to a horrible rental, that can make settling really hard. Lastly.... don't be influenced by people you've met online who say "live here it's close to me" you may meet them and not have much in common and end up living somewhere you wouldn't have necessarily chosen just to be near someone you never see. Oh one more thing, it is a waste of time to contact rental agents before you arrive, they want people ready to rent now and you want to view the home and get to know the area before you commit, rental agents are all satan in disguise so tread very carefully.

thanks.
The reason we thought about Gilles Plains. Is that is were the wifes job is.
Not realy that fussed about being by the beach. Just as long as there isn't drunks running about all day and night. And your not frightend to go out. For far of being robbed or your house broken into.

Pommygirl - June 19, 2008 09:04 PM (GMT)
Have you looked at Golden Grove? That's a nice area and rather posh! We looked at Craigmore when we were considering the northern suburbs but decided we wanted to be near the beach more. We have family in St Agnes and Redwood Park and both are nice areas. I love Tea Tree Plaza Shopping Centre. I would steer clear from Elizabeth - it still has a bad reputation and that is where they built all the prefabs for the poms back in the 60's.

How much money are you looking to spend?

Looking to rent when we get there. for a couple of years then we will work out if we are going to stay or not.
Just want a good area to settle into, and not pay through the roof.
We're any thing but, posh..lol..
Never met a posh scotsman. it that one that wears boxers uner his kilt...

coco - June 21, 2008 09:29 AM (GMT)
Thought of some thing.
Am i better booking into a hotel for the first few weeks till i find some were to stay.
And any ideas on a car? buy or hire???

ProofReader - June 21, 2008 10:24 AM (GMT)

Motel/hotel for two weeks is a good start. You can always extend it if necessary. As long as you don't arrive mid school holidays and want to stay by the sea, you should be able to find accommodation fairly easily I would've thought.

Buy a car - why pay for a rental when you're gunna buy one anyway?! :dunno:

How many kids have you got, Coco, and what ages?

coco - June 21, 2008 11:46 AM (GMT)
we have 2 going with us 14 and 18.
the 18 yr old will have to get his own visa.
He is hopeing to get to collage once he gets there.

Pommygirl - June 21, 2008 11:56 PM (GMT)
lol Bix you so funny.

coco, if money is of concern then I would choose a suburb further out of the City. Initially it might be a good idea to book into a caravan park. Some links below:

http://www.parks-sa.com.au/
http://www.big4.com.au/public/
Moana Beach Tourist Park http://www.moanabeachtouristpark.com.au/
Aldinga Caravan park www.beachwoods.com.au
McLaren Vale http://www.mclarenvale.net/
Marion Holiday Park http://www.marionholidaypark.com.au/

Or if you prefer a house:

Rental properties down south:
A few properties here to consider: http://www.downunderrentals.com/index_1.html
4 Bedroom rental in McLaren Vale www.mclarencottage.com.au
Cottage in Aldinga http://hardyscoastalcottage.com/

Hope this helps.

Michelle
