Title: god it breaks my heart ...
tiredwithtwins - June 9, 2008 09:29 PM (GMT)
... to see the state of some countries like ethiopia ... families spend their entire wage on flour ... and even that is getting too expensive :(
starving kids, practically non existent health care ... when will the world look after its poorer neighbours??
the british govt bloke said the uk was sending £10million in aid ... surely to god that much money should make a difference? - but i suspect it goes in admin and to a corrupt govt ... probably only a small amount actually gets through to the front line.
i wish i could do something ... it really does break my heart to see it :upset:

Sue you can do something  organise the Guides to do a fund raiser - wheelathon, disco etc and get them to send over parcels or shoe boxes with a load of gear as that is something we are doing next term. The girls get a real kick out of helping and if it's organised through the Guides themselves they will get the boxes there for you. It is very very sad that in this day and age this sort of thing goes on throughout the world.

completely agree - you can do something and, if everyone did something little it would add up to a lot.
I sponser a 'tip' child in Cambodia, I pay $40 a month and every cent goes towards proving an education to my little girl (she's 7), gives her a meal every day and provides food for her family (mum, dad, 5 brothers, 2 sisters) to make up for the fact that she no longer works for the family collecting rubbish to sell from a tip.
It is the tip of an iceberg but doing something is better than nothing :dunno:

the shoebox thing is a good idea - will look into that tonight.
ohippy we sponsor a child through world vision, plus we have a DD monthly to Oxfam; I also do the campaigns through amnesty, and regularly do letters for oxfam and the pledges ... :dunno: ... just wish there was something more practical i could do.
before i had kids i applied to work for vso - got through and was about to go on the training courses but got cold feet .
:blushing:

the shoeboxes are great, we used to do them at Christmas. Good for the kids to get involved with too
I wish I was brave enough to get my a**e out there and help out. Truth is, I am too scared of the feelings it would stir in me.

Sadly I think you are right Sue.
What happened to the multi millions raised by Geldhof for this very cause ?
You can bet there is a very affluent society in Ethiopia who will continue to milk the efforts of humanitarians.
Scandalous.
