Title: Wood - how does it need to be treated
Description: to get through customs?

This may seem like a daft question, I'll explain. We're taking the minimum (no container for us). A friend of ours is sorting the shipping of our stuff we can't fit in our suitcases. He says don't bother taking anything wood because it'll need a ticket.
I would be really sad to leave a pine abacus that my sister bought for the kids, some wooden building bricks they still play with, and a few other toys made of wood (all pine I think).
What do I need to treat them with to get them into Aus without a fuss?

Don't worry - it'll be fine.
AQIS are concerned with things that have bark, mud, seeds or signs of termite activity.

Cheers Marco, thank goodness, I've had to be so ruthless already this whole move was beginning to break my heart!

Its untreated wood they have a problem with
The abacus and toys etc i imagine have either been varnished, waxed or something, so will all be ok!!!
Trust me i'm a surgeon
Oh no i'm not , but trust me any way  :hide:

Wood is one of the main items checked by AQIS.
If they find anything they are not happy with it is either destroyed or fumigated at your cost. I have seen figures quoted of $80 per item for destroying and more for fumigation.
Check out anything you are unsure about here
http://www.aqis.gov.au/icon32/asp/homecontent.aspGenerally though if it's solid wood with no insect bore holes (old or new) it will be okay.

Thank you Sam and BIX, I'm sure the few bits I really want to take for the kids will be okay, I may have to leave behind an African carving but there's no love lost there!
