Title: Are you missing your double glazing?
Description: Check out this!

Feeling the draughts? Been told double glazing isn't an option or don't you want the expense or mess?

I've seen comments about this on here and B.E., about how houses here aren't constructed with proper insulation against draughts - windows especially. In the summer the glass conducts the heat in, and in winter the draughts, certainly in Sydney, can be really annoying.

A few weeks back I had wool batts put in my roof ( I have a townhouse style unit on 2nd & 3rd floors of the block so I have a pitched roof) and the whole place has been a much more even temperature and I haven't had to use so much spot heating. (No central heating here, folks - another gripe I see a fair bit) - anyway, that was stage one of warming up the freezing TopCats. Today stage two arrived.

I have a large double window/balcony door which takes up one wall of my loungeroom and is at the foot of the stairs. No matter how much I sat on top of my heater I could feel the wind whistling round my feet and that whole area felt cold as you reached the foot of the stairs.(The loungeroom heat just rises up the stairs of course - hate open plan) Today I had Magnetite "double glazing" fitted - WOW what a difference. It's a very strong acrylic sheet in a frame containing an embedded magnet which fits over your existing window/glass door. They are custom made to measure. You can't even see it once it's installed. It's not cheap, but it's a more affordable alternative to having all your windows ripped out and replaced - I am so thrilled  I want to tell everyone about it :more:

It's a franchised thing with operators in different areas (mine was from Marrickville in Sydney's inner west) but there is a central website you can visit and see examples www.magnetite.com.au.

It also kills all the noise which is an added bonus, though I'm in a quiet spot in the corner of the block anyway.

I'm trying to get them to come back to change my curtain brackets because it all looks a bit weird now, need them lowered etc, but apart from that I am THRILLED.
So if anyone has been looking at this and wondering about it, I can thoroughly recommend it.

Now all that's needed is to fix all those building defects...another story...builder in hiding and insurance claim lodged...waiting, waiting, breathing...

Just checked out the web site - thanks for that. Do you just take them down and store them in summer or leave them in place?

Never had double glazing - must be too old!! I did have your problem TC until I had new windows installed across the front of the house, now no draughts - heaven! :D

Leave them in place Pen. It's not just the draughts - glass draws heat from the room in winter, and pulls heat into the room in summer. Hence Magnetite gives you insulation from the heat as well.
My first Saturday night in front of the tv since they were fitted - bliss - no draughts, no "cold spot" in the room - I haven't even got the fire on! :D

Can I assume that you got that bit the wrong way round

Thanks for that. Might look into it further. :D
