Casual Employees working conditions in QLD

A casual is an employee hired on an hourly or daily basis as provided for in the award.
A casual employee is not entitled to annual leave, sick leave or paid public holidays.
However, casuals are compensated for the loss of these entitlements by way of an extra loading added to their ordinary rate of pay.

Casual Loading
The extra hourly rate of pay that must be paid to casual employees, over and above the normal hourly award rate, to compensate them for not accruing leave entitlements or being guaranteed work.
The rate is expressed as a percentage and generally varies from 23% above the standard hourly rate in different awards.

An example of how this loading can work:
QUOTE
Full Time at say $15.00 per hour, working for 46 weeks at 38 hrs per week. (allowing for 6 weeks total holiday and public holidays)
Total Income = $29,640.00  ie: 52 wks at 38hrs

Casual (with 23% loading) $18.45 per hour, working for  46 weeks at 38 hrs per week.
Total Income = $32,250.60

Casuals can be financially better off, when compared to the same hours full time.

Casual Workers in QLD are also entitled to Long Service Leave.

QUOTE
As from 23 June 1990, an employee who is regularly employed by the same employer for at least 32 hours in each consecutive period of four weeks has an entitlement to long service leave.

On 30 March 1994, the legislation was amended so that all continuous service after that date is taken into account in calculating long service leave entitlements. This continuous service may be broken by a break of more than 3 months between the end of one employment contract and the start of the next employment contract.

In the case of casual employees who qualified for long service leave in accordance with any previous legislation, each period is totalled and taken into account.

The casual entitlement to long service leave is calculated as the number of hours for the complete period of employment worked/52 x 8.6667/10.

You can ask, but you won't necessarily get an answer!

In my limited experience of mortgagee versus casual worker, the worker usually comes off second best in the eligibility stakes. :(
