The road fatality figures for 2005, based on State Populations at 2004 are:
VIC 7.01 per 100,000 population
NSW 7.69
ACT 8.02
WA 8.24
QLD 8.44
SA 9.72
TAS 10.37
NT 27.03
Australia Total 8.14

Motor vehicles in Australia travelled an estimated 199,055 million kilometres in the 12 months ended 31 October 2004. Passenger vehicles accounted for about 147,700 million kilometres.
In the 12 months ended 31 October 2004 there were an estimated 13.5 million vehicles registered in Australia.
Passenger vehicles totalled about 10,665,000 registered vehicles in 2004.

Therefore Australian passenger vehicles each travelled an average of 13,850 kilometres in the 12 months ended 31 October 2004.

The average mileage of a typical privately-owned car is 8,700 miles. (14,000kms) Averaging 30 miles per gallon, it consumes 290 gallons or 1318 litres of petrol per year

In the UK there were 29.7 million registered in 2001
